GENERAL NOTES
The DaVita Dialysis Clinic is a project under construction at 31811 Pacific HWY South, Suite A in Federal Way,
Washington. It will be under the jurisdictional review of the City of Federal Way. It is a sprinklered, one-story
building of Type IIB Construction, and approximately 8,200 square feet with B and S-2 Occupancies. This
construction project is considered a mixed -use building, as the storage occupancy cannot be considered an
accessory occupancy because it exceeds 10% of the floor area of the story per IBC §508.2.3.
One of the building systems does not meet the prescriptive code requirements or does not meet tested fire
resistive assembly requirements. The project includes a wall assembly consisting of a glulam beam that does
not match a tested / listed system per Underwriters Laboratories and is required to meet a 1-hour fire -
resistance rating per the IBC.
This Engineering Judgement (EJ) addresses the condition of the glulam beam between the Corridor (Room
124) and Storage Room (Room 111) on Level 1 at column line 2 for the purpose of showing equivalent
protection of 1-hour fire -resistance as required by Table 508.4 of the IBC. The location of the beam is shown in
Figure 1.
Code Unlimited, a Jensen Hughes Company has been asked to review and advise on this proposed fire-
resistant assembly condition. This EJ is only applicable to the element and location specified above. Other
elements and locations were not reviewed for this document.

3 DISCUSSION
3.1 Approach
The proposed beam assembly has been analyzed in accordance with 2018 IBC §703.3 Methods for
Determining Fire Resistance.
® The proposed beam assembly has been analyzed in accordance with 2018 IBC Table 508.4 Required
Separation of Occupancies.
• The proposed beam assembly has been analyzed in accordance with 2018 IBC §707.5 Continuity.
® Portions of the tested assembly are modified to suit the unique design condition. The modification is analyzed
for equivalency using published fire test data and acceptable fire science principles.
4 PROPOSED DESIGN
The proposed wall assembly references the UL U494 wall assembly. This referenced assembly is a 1-hour
rated structural support wall provided to meet the occupancy separation requirement. This proposed design
consists of a soffit assembly at the steel I-beam and glulam beam above the existing wall between the Corridor
(Room 124) and the Storage Room (Room 111) to provide continuous protection at the fire barrier per IBC
§707.5. The exposed I-beam, glulam beam, and conduit suspended from the I-beam will be encased in a soffit
made of gypsum board and will be installed to maintain a 1-hour fire resistance rating of the wall per Table
508.4 of the IBC, shown below in Figure 2. The proposed wall detail showing the soffit design can be seen
below in Figure 3.

5 ASSEMBLY ANALYSIS
5.1 UL Assembly Design Comparison
The proposed assembly of glulam 6 3/" x 27 is a structural member supporting the underside of HVAC rooftop
units. It is compared to the test assembly U494. The details of this UL assembly can be found in Figure 4.
Table 1 highlights the comparison between the proposed design elements and the UL assembly design
elements. This table depicts each design element to justify the proposed design through its similarities with the
UL Assembly design to establish the minimum required rating of 1-hour.

5.2 Char Depth Analysis
The UL Assembly analysis in the previous section illustrates the efficacy of the proposed assembly for the
purposes of maintaining a continuous, 1-hour rated fire barrier assembly per §707.5 and Table 508.4 of the
IBC. This section focuses on a conservative analysis of the beam itself to ensure it would remain structurally
sound after 1 hour of fire exposure, as well as a realistic analysis of the char depth for a 20-minute exposure
with the additional 40 minutes of fire protection provided by the soffit structure.
The existing beam does not provide any structural load but is in place for stability purposes and is located near
the ceiling at a 1-hour rated wall provided for occupancy separation. The occupancy separation is considered a
fire barrier and must be continuously extended from the slab per IBC §707.5 to prevent passage of smoke and
flames into adjacent occupancies. The beam and suspended conduit will be enclosed in a soffit for continuity,
but for a conservative and thorough analysis, a char depth calculation has been provided for the beam. The
char depth was calculated per Equation 1-13 in AWC NDS Technical Report 10 for a fire exposure of 1 hour to
showcase protection equal to or greater than the 1-hour rated fire barrier assembly.
The provided 6 %" x 27" glulam beam has an added C15x40 steel channel on each side, which will not be
considered in the char depth calculation for a more conservative analysis. The NDS specifies an effective char
layer depth of 1.8" per hour for a 1-hour fire exposure as shown below in Figure 5. Nominal char rate per hour,
(3n, is commonly assumed to be 1.5 inches/hour for glued -laminated timbers.
It should be noted that char is classified by the discoloration of the wood, whereas effective char refers to the
wood material that is no longer structurally reliable for load bearing. Since the fire barrier is rated for 1-hour of
fire resistance and the soffit will provide forty minutes of protection, the beam is only required to maintain fire
resistance for 20 minutes in the case of a fire impacting the beam within the soffit assembly. The char depth
calculations are shown below in Figures 6 and 7, and Figure 8 depicts a visual representation of the char depth
on the wood beam assembly in the soffit.

Figure 7: Char calculations for 20-minute exposure.
Figure 8: Visual representation of conservative and realistic char depth on the wood beam assembly for 1-hour
exposure (red) and 20-minute exposure (blue).
The conservative char depth calculation yields a char depth of 1.5" after 1 hour of fire exposure, while a
realistic depth of char would be closer 0.6" after 20 minutes of exposure when considering the soffit assembly,
which offers 40 minutes of protection due to the two layers of Type X 5/8" gypsum board. Since the beam does
not provide a structural load and the glulam beam is in place for stability purposes only, our analysis indicates
that the beam will continue to function as intended, especially with the additional component of the soffit
protecting the beam.

6 CONCLUSION
The proposed soffit and beam assembly have been reviewed regarding the inherent fire protection resistance
provided by the UL Assembly Design Analysis for UL Design U494 as well as a conservative char depth
calculation on the structural beam itself. The analysis of UL Design U494 with the proposed beam illustrates
the fire resistance rating of the proposed assembly by emphasizing design similarities in the proposed design
and the certified fire resistance rated design. Through this analysis, the soffit assembly has been shown to act
as a sufficient fire barrier to provide a 1-hour fire rating as well as serve as a continuous barrier per the IBC.
The char depth calculation is a conservative analysis of the beam because it calculates the char depth for an
exposed beam, whereas in this assembly the beam is protected by the soffit assembly. In either case, it was
determined that the char depth would not be so great as to impact the supportive functionality of the beam.
Based on the analysis conducted above, the proposed soffit and beam assembly will provide equal or greater
fire protection as the listed 1-hour rated occupancy separation wall.
