09-16-20 Senior Advisory Minutes Page 1 of 3 SENIOR ADVISORY COMMISSION SUMMARY September 16, 2020 @ 2:00PM Via ZOOM Commissioners Present: Chair Debbie Harvey, Vice Chair Lana Bostic, Kenneth Pratt, Sue Ellebrecht, Lynette Karasuda, Catherine North, Cheryl Volheim, Frank Fields (Alternate) Absent: Hope Elder, Kevin King, Dora “Pal” Leonard (Alternate) Staff Present: Council President Susan Honda & Jeri-Lynn Clark, Executive Assistant Citizens Present: Rev. Colleen Chinen (Assoc. Pastor from Steel Lake Presbyterian Church) 1. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 2:05 p.m. 2. CITIZEN COMMENTS None. 3. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS New Commissioner introduction from Ken Pratt 4. COMMISSION BUSINESS A. APPROVAL OF 8/19 /2020 MEETING MINUTES MOVED TO 10/21/2020 MEETING B. UPDATE ON WHAT THE LOCAL AREA COMMUNITY CENTERS PROVIDE FOR SENIOR ACTIVITIES Vice Chair Bostic shared that the Federal Way Community Center (FWCC) reopened with COVID-19 guidelines on September 2, 2020. The Pro’s for the FWCC is: • Silver Sneaker Program – Possibly free membership through insurance • Senior Trips • Senior Room • Nice Facility • Lunch programs – 2x a week Page 2 of 3 • Pool Tables • Card games • Defensive Drivers Classes • AARP Classes Con’s : • Not just a senior center • Monthly costs $43 a month Commissioner North updated the Commission on the Federal Way Senior Center Pro’s: • Lunch 5 days a week • Continental breakfast 5 days a week • Costs per meal is $4 or free if needed • Annual membership fee $25 • Bingo • Holiday parties • Arts & Crafts • Food banks • Many come to drink coffee and socialize Con’s: • Location Commissioner North updated the Commission on the Auburn Senior Center Pro’s: • Lunch 5 days a week • Costs per meal is $4 or free if needed • Holiday parties • Trips • Movies • Pool Tables Enumclaw Senior Center offers blood pressure checks and podiatrist checks. C. BROCHURE UPDATE - LOCATIONS Commissioner Fields shared that he has placed the brochures at Life Care Center, Macy’s, Fife Attorney Office, Enterprise Car Rental, SHAG and various restaurants. Commissioner North shared that she has dropped them off at the Federal Way Senior Center, Northwest Wellness, and Federal Way Farmers Market. Commissioner Pratt will follow up with St. Francis and Chair Harvey will check with Virginia Mason. Page 3 of 3 Vice Chair Bostic will contact the Federal Way Mirror about doing an article on the Senior Advisory Commission, the brochure and that we are celebrating our one year anniversary. 5.
