Mrs. Mary Jaenicke, My name is Jack Barrow III. 1 am the great great grandson of John Conn and a cousin to Maisha Barnett. The irony for me is I lived in Federal way for 6 years before moving south without the full depth of knowledge about John Conna and the city.. I wish to add my voice of support for the renaming of Alderbrook Park in honor of John and Mary Conna. The history of their legacy is unique in the Pacific Northwest. I hope this finds you well and resonates with Federal Ways legislators. Dear Ms. Jaenicke and members of the Federal Way Parks and Recreation Commission: I am writing to express my support for the current proposal to rename Alderbrook Park to honor African American pioneers John and Mary Conna. As a historic preservation consultant who works throughout King County, I recognize and celebrate the regional significance of this proposing renaming. Honoring the historic and enduring impact of community leaders such as the Connas provides a tangible link to the past, and promotes awareness that our communities have always been comprised of diverse members. I was pleased to see that updated interpretive signage at the park has been addressed as part of the renaming plan, and I hope this historical information can be incorporated into local school curriculum. Congratulations on your efforts. Holly Taylor, Principal Past Forward NW Cultural Services PO Box 13027, Burton WA 98013 holly@pastforwardnw.com
