HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-15-2021 King County Potential ShelterShelter and Permanent Supportive Housing with King County Tuesday, June 15, 2021 CITY OF Federal Way Centered on Opportunity Two Potential Projects Permanent supportive housing at the Extended Stay America Shelter at the Red Lion Priority of Addressing Homelessness ■ Homelessness continues to be a priority for the City. ■ The City added a goal to the approved 2020-2024 CDBG program to prevent and address homelessness — included Human Services Commission, Mayor, and City Council support. ■ Shelter for adults and housing with services continues to be a gap in the City. ■ City support of establishing a year round shelter • Homelessness Task Force included expanded shelter as the first recommendation in its 2018 report. • City Council approved the recommendation at a special meeting in October 2019. • Funding was included in the 2021 CDBG Annual Action Plan to support acquisition/rehabilitation of shelter for adults and was supported by the Human Services Commission, Mayor Ferrell, and City Council. Permanent Supportive Housing Project ■ King County is pursuing acquisition of the Extended Stay. • The property is zoned for the use. ■ Provides local solution and option for housing with services for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness. • Funds outreach to engage individuals who may be less likely to engage or know of services. Relationship is key to success. • Includes and funds case management and behavioral health services (mental health and substance use treatment). • Participants will be referred to other services that may help them achieve their goals and achieve/maintain housing. • Site would be staffed 24/7. • Partnership with the City, King County, selected provider, and community to develop ongoing partnership and communication once service begins.
