There are 8-10 volunteer Poplar(Cottonwood) trees adjacent to two homes in the
Alder brook housing development. The trees are situated on city property
between 32324 16th Avenue SW and 32408 16th Avenue SW . During a recent
windstorm the top of one of these trees broke out damaging the fence of our
neighboring property owner to the north, Jill Sharon.
I have been contacted by the property owner to the south as well, with safety
concerns about these trees. Although the trees appear to be healthy, they have
grown to a size that the potential for damage has greatly increased. Also, there is
one tree with a significant lean towards the southern dwelling, further increasing
the likelihood of property damage. The trees regularly drop branches and debris
on our neighboring property due to the proximity to the fence lines.
The trees surrounding both properties have been assessed for hazard. I have
concluded that the trees pose a significant safety hazard to the properties
mentioned above.. I do not believe the trees should be replaced with an
alternative species as they were not planted in connection with any development
requirements. In the event that Community development would require
replanting, I would recommend dogwood or cedar species as the replacement.
I submit this letter to request permission to remove the trees as soon as possible
to prevent additional property damage. I have attached a few pictures of the
location as additional information. Thank you for your consideration of this
matter.

Subject: Tree removal request
The Parks Department has been contacted by the property owner of 33305 10th
Cr SW, Nick Callahan. Mr. Callahan reported that an Alder tree fell on his
fence from city property bordering his home. City staff responded to clean up the
tree debris and Mr. Callahan expressed his concern about two other trees in the
same location. Both are Alder trees with significant likelihood to fall in the future
on the fence of our neighbor. The first is a single trunk 18 inch DBH and the
second, a two trunk 10 inch DBH. They are situated in a natural / green belt area
with several long lived evergreen species surrounding them and in close
proximity.
I have assessed the trees and concluded they should be removed or heavily
reduced in crown size. This is due to their significant lean, presence of a target
and very high likelihood they will cause further property damage liability. I do not
believe the trees should be replaced in this case since the canopy of evergreen
species would have crowded these trees out in the long term. In addition they are
colony species that were not planted in connection with any development
requirements.
In the event that Community Development would require replanting, I would
recommend a shade tolerant species such as dogwood or cedar for the
replacement.
I submit this letter to request permission to remove the trees as soon as possible
to prevent additional property damage. I have attached a few pictures of the
location as additional information. Thank you for your consideration of this
matter.
