YC Minutes 10-13-2022 CITY OF FEDERAL WAY YOUTH COMMISSION th Thursday, October 13, 2022 Forest Lounge 5:00 p.m. Federal Way Community Center MEETING MINUTES Chair Ankit called the meeting to order at 5:07pm. Present: Alexandre Milsten, Ankit Gowda, Bryan Aguillar, Justin Lowy, Niko Manjares Staff: Kim Ledyard (Community Recreation Coordinator), David Clemons (Dumas Bay Manager), Ashriya Guptar (Administrative Assistant) PUBLIC COMMENT No public comments. COMMISSION BUSINESS All Commissioners vote to approve the minutes from the previous meeting. Work-Plan Discussion Raffle Donations Chair Ankit asks if commissioners have made any progress on gathering donation items for the raffle donation basket. Commissioner Alex has not heard back from Wild Waves about Fright Fest ticket donations. Vice-Chair Bryan brings up contacting Vince’s Italian restaurant. He will reach out and ask if they can donate a coupon or a meal ticket. Clemons suggests a Fall or Winter themed basket and gives examples of fall/winter themed items that could be included in the basket. Commissioner Justin asks if the businesses that donate have to be local or if commissioners are able to donate their own items/ purchase from stores. Clemons confirms that any donation items are accepted; they do not have to be from businesses. Chair Ankit asks how the raffle tickets are sold. Ledyard informs the commissioners that tickets will be sold at the FWCC front desk and donation tickets will be available for purchase for about a month before the drawing takes place. Commissioner Alex asks where items need to be dropped off. Ledyard says that items can be dropped off to the FWCC Front Desk. Clemons suggests that the commissioners set goals and create deadlines for the raffle ticket drawing date. Chair Ankit motions to stst approve the raffle to take place between December 1-December 31. All Commissioners vote in favor. Vice-Chair Bryan asks which businesses previous Youth Commissioners have gone to for donations. Ledyard stated that previous Commissioners have not done a raffle basket like the current YC is doing this year. She recommends that commissioners get creative when deciding which businesses to contact. Commissioners go around the table sharing which businesses they will reach out to.  Commissioner Niko will reach out to McDonalds and Panda Express  Vice-Chair Bryan will reach out to Vince’s and Starbucks  Commissioner Alex will reach out to Chick Fil A and ONIT  Chair Ankit will reach out to Red Robin and Centerstage Theater  Commissioner Justin will reach out to Sub Zero and Black Bear Diner Vice-Chair Bryan asks what the next steps are in case their companies reject their donation request. Ledyard suggests trying different companies or being persistent and asking different people from the same company. Clemons reminds commissioners to wear their Youth Commission T-Shirts when they visit businesses. th Youth Commission, October 13, 2022 Page 2 Recruiting New Commissioners Chair Ankit, Commissioner Niko and Commissioner Justin attended the FWHS Block Party and they spoke to a number of students who were interested in joining the youth commission. Commissioner Justin has a list of 12 students’ phone numbers and email addresses. Commissioner Justin suggests that the three commissioners collaborate writing the email and he will send it out. Chair Ankit and Commissioner Niko agree. Special Events Tricks and Treats FWCC Special Event Coordinators have reached out to the Commission about selling concessions at the Tricks and th Treats event on October 29. Commissioner Niko asks if the event will count towards Service Hours for school. Ledyard and Clemons confirm that any commission business counts towards service hours. Commissioner Justin will not be able to attend the event. All other commissioners agree to participate. Ledyard asks what commissioners would like to sell at the event. Commissioner Alex suggests selling water, juice, pretzels. Chair Ankit suggests selling Gatorade and chips. Jingle Bell Brunch Chair Ankit suggests selling raffle tickets/advertising the raffle basket at Jingle Bell Brunch since it will take place on December 3rd while the raffle is going on. Cold Weather Drive Clemons informs the Commissioners about the Federal Way Day Center and the donation drive that the Community Center hosts. He informs the commissioners that this does not have to be a priority and all commissioners have to do is advertise the drive and encourage the public to donate to the FWCC’s donation box. Chair Ankit motions to table this discussion until the next meeting. All commissioners vote to approve.
