YC Minutes 11-11-2022 CITY OF FEDERAL WAY YOUTH COMMISSION th Thursday, November 11, 2022 Forest Lounge 5:00 p.m. Federal Way Community Center MEETING MINUTES Vice-Chair Bryan called the meeting to order at 5:16pm. Present: Alexandre Milsten, Bryan Aguillar, Niko Manjares Absent: Ankit Gowda (excused), Justin Lowy (excused), Sienna Mayo (unexcused) Staff: Kim Ledyard (Community Recreation Coordinator), David Clemons (Dumas Bay Manager), Ashriya Guptar (Administrative Assistant) PUBLIC COMMENT No public comments. COMMISSION BUSINESS All Commissioners vote to approve the minutes from the previous meeting. ARPA Social Services Funding – Sarah Bridgeford Community Services Manager; Sarah Bridgeford gives the Youth Commission an introduction to the ARPA Social Services Funds. 1 million dollars of the grant is going towards Youth Programming. Sarah asks the commission to think about different programs that the commissioners would like to see the grant money going towards. Commissioner Niko suggests athletic programming. Commissioner Alex suggests Extracurricular activities specifically focusing on the effects of COVID and re-building community. Vice-Chair Bryan suggests Food Banks and after school food bank opportunities. Sarah presents the idea of the Commissioners being involved in the interview process/ being a part of the conversation about the grant recipients. All commissioners are interested in participating. Commissioner Alex suggests sending out a survey or having one available at the Front Desk. Vice-Chair Bryan suggests a survey with the question “If you had a million dollars, what would you do for your community?” Recap - Tricks & Treats All commissioners agree that Tricks and Treats went great. They enjoyed working the event and dressing up. Donation Items - Update  Commissioner Niko has not heard anything back from McDonalds and Panda Express. He will try reaching out to Panda Express again.  Commissioner Alex says that ONIT declined, he has reached out to Chick Fil A and they will contact Ledyard. Clemons suggests reaching out to CFA again and following up. Commissioner Alex will also try reaching out to Subway and Dominos.  Vice-Chair Bryan got a $50 gift card from Vince’s, the manager at Vince’s will be promoting the gift basket at the restaurant. FirStep Scholarship Age requirements th Youth Commission, November 11, 2022 Page 2 Ledyard informs the Commission that there have been inquiries about expanding the age requirement for the FirStep Scholarship to include more than just high schoolers. Commissioner Niko suggests having the application serve K-12th graders. Vice-Chair Bryan would like to include as many members of youth as possible. Ledyard asks what donations should be capped at. The Commissioners ask how much programs cost and Ledyard explains that it varies depending on the program. The commissioners agree to table the discussion until all commissioners are present. Jingle Bell Brunch The Youth Commission agrees to participate at Jingle Brunch; they are open to working a game booth or helping with check-ins. They will double check their schedules and let the City Staff know if anything comes up.
