The Community and Economic Development Department has completed review of your request to
remove trees at the above -mentioned property. This letter is in response to your October 28, 2013, email
request to remove 11 select hazardous trees, 2 tree tops, and a number of limbs as follows:
• An 18" Alder at the NE Corner of the park is leaning 20 degrees over the power supply box,
fence and back yard, and needs to be removed.
• A 2-stem bitter cherry tree, located between the path and the fence of the neighbor's yard, is an
`imminent risk' and needs to be removed. The bark near the base where the stems diverge is
separated and in the process of failing.
• Within 12 inches of the fence, three 12-18" diameter Alders have very large, low -hanging limbs
over the backyard areas. The removal of these limbs is necessary.
• A heavily, English Ivy -infested 20" Alder located along the east fence needs to have the ring
around the stem cut to kill the ivy in the tree.
• Two 14" Alders near the SE corner of the grass area of the park are both leaning on the
neighbor's fence and growing 15-20 degrees over the backyards.
• A small dead Alder just east of the path entering the forest and another dead alder south of the
path, need to be cut down.
• A fallen Alder leaning into other trees on the western perimeter at the SW corner of the park
needs to be safely removed as to not fall into the neighbor's yard.
• A dead Alder top in the tree next to the path at the SW corner is leaning slightly towards the west
fence.
• Two dead Alders on either side of the path towards the SW corner of the recreational portion of
the park need to be removed.
• A dead Alder where the asphalt path diverges east/west needs to be removed.
■ A dead Alder top west of western path near the entrance of the forest, needs to be removed.
As an ISA certified arborist, Mr. Landrud has determined that the above -referenced trees are hazardous as
per Federal Way Revised Code (FWRC) 19.120.030(12); therefore, the city hereby authorizes the removal
of the hazardous trees.

We received a couple calls about several tree concerns at Lake Grove Park, so I had Thundering Oak
perform a formal assessment on the perimeter of the park. Please see the attached information which
concur with and ask permission to perform the recommended work as describe in the report.

Re: Lake Grove Tree Report
Hi Steve,
I walked Lake Grove a few weeks ago, and checked on most of the trees therein, focusing on
perimeter trees that are/may affect neighboring residents or at risk of failing into higher use -areas
of the park. Below is my list of priority trees that should be addressed as soon as is practical. Of
course, dead trees present a higher failure probability, while structurally compromised live trees =
generally fail more dramatically with a heavier biomass.
My survey started at the northeast corner of the park, followed the park south, along the southern
loop, then back north to the starting point. The enclosed map notes the approximate -location of
each tree. I did not have the map as I was conducting the inspection.
1. 18" Alder at NE corner of park. Tree is leaning 20' over power supply box, fence and back:
yard. The top of the tree has already broken off. Remove tree.
2. 2-stem bitter cherry tree between path and fence. Included bark near base where stems =
diverge — is separated and in the process of failing. This is an `imminent risk' tree. Remove
tree.
3. 3 12-18" diameter alders, all within 12 inches of the fence, and all growing/leaning over the
fence. All are healthy, but have very large, low -hanging limbs over back yard areas.
Remove such limbs from all 3 trees.
4. 20" alder along east fence — heavily infested with English ivy. Cut ring around stem to kill
ivy in tree.
5. 2 14" alders near SE corner of grass area of hark. Both leaning against fence and growing
15-20' over back yards. Remove both trees.
6. Small dead alder just east of path as it enters forest. Fall dead tree.
7. Dead alder south of southern portion of path. Fall dead tree.
8. Fallen alder leaning into other trees on western perimeter at SW corner of park. Safely
remove tree so it doesn't fall into neighbor's yard.
9. Dead alder top in tree next to path at SW corner. Top is leaning slightly towards west fence.'
Remove dead top.
10.2 dead alders on either side of path, SW corner of recreational portion of park. Fall 2 dead
trees.
11. Dead alder where asphalt path diverges east/west — fall dead tree.
12. Dead alder top west of western path near entry to forest. Fall dead tree.
Some of this work may be . _ zessible with a lift truck, but the majoi_ , will have to be
climbed, with most debris needing to be hauled out of the resident's back yards.
Respectfully submitted,
Bryce Landrud
