At the time of our arrival, we met with Jimmy of Rock River Excavating. Per discussion with Jimmy, the contractor removed approximately 4"-1' of material from the building footprint to remove material saturated due to groundwater seepage from the slope to the west of the site. The contractor had replaced the removed material with 4"-1' of quarry spalls to bring the area up to design grade. Using a %" diameter steel probe and the full weight of the observer, AESI verified the depth of the quarry spalls. At the time of our arrival, we met with Jimmy of Rock River Excavating. The contractor had completed the subgrade preparation by cutting 1-4 feet into the slope to create one level pad. Using a Y2" diameter steel probe and the full weight of the observer, AESI observed the subgrade. Probe penetrations were less than 3 and the subgrade was observed to be -firm and unyielding. With the exception of a few inches of surface disturbed silty soil saturated From recent rain, the exposed soil consisted of dense, silty sand to gravelly sand. In our opinion, the exposed soil is suitable for 1,500 psf, per plan. We recommended that the contractor remove any surface mud created during forms and rebar work.
