Re: cottonwood on Norman Center property
Hi Lance,
I inspected the large cottonwood just behind the homes on SW 331'Pl. a few weeks ago. While
there, I spoke with one of the `neighbors' of the tree, who offered the concerns he shared with his
neighbors to the west. The tree is a very large black cottonwood about 50 feet south of the
fence/property line. Though I did not walk through the wetland to measure it,my guess is that
it's about 44 inches in diameter. It is easily over 100 feet tall.
The tree appears healthy and is evidently well adapted and suited to this location, given its size
and presence here for the past 60-80 years. I do not believe it has been compromised in any way
that would lead to a complete failure of the root system or stem wood.
The tops, however, fork and head up in different directions about 70 feet up, which appears to be
a point at which some mitigation cutting was done in the past(limb removal?). several (3) of
these co-dominant tops now are angling toward or have a growth habit towards AND are within
range of 3 of the nearest homes.
My recommendation to remove the threat of a failure damaging these homes or properties is to
simply remove the three north-oriented tops. The remaining two tops grow the other direction,
and none of the branches are long enough to ever impact the homeowners. The removal of the
tops will also remove a tremendous amount of mass from the top of the tree, lessening any
potential for the tree to fail.
Respectfully submitted,
Bryce Landrud

Subject: Tree limb removal #18-10004
Mr. Erickson;
I apologize for not getting the approval for tree limb removal to you before now. My staff is overwhelmed with
assignment at this time and I am handling these type of issues since we do not yet have an intern. As stated I have
approved the limb removal, but request that you submit some photos of the tree for purposes of completing the file if
anyone should request record of it. I will place this email in the file.
