We understand that the proposed development will involve a single -story building with an attached garage and surface parking. A storm water infiltration system is proposed along the west side of the property. This system includes a 6-inch diameter, perforated pipe in a gravel -filled trench. A site location map is shown in Figure 1 and a site plan is shown in Figure 2, which are included at the end of this report. 2.0 SCOPE OF SERVICES The purpose of our study is to provide recommendations regarding the design of the storm water infiltration system. Specifically, our services included: 1. Exploration of soil and groundwater conditions underlying the site through the excavation of 2 test pits, TP-1 and TP-2. 2. Performance of three onsite infiltration tests per King County Surface Water Manual. 3. Engineering evaluation of the infiltration rate for the design of the infiltration system. 4. Five copies of this written infiltration report which contain a site plan, test pit log, a description of subsurface conditions, and our findings and recommendations. S&EE s2arpt 3.0 SITE CONDITIONS The project site is located in a residential area. The site surface is flat and covered with grass and sparse trees. The ground surface at the west neighbor is about one to two feet lower than the site surface. The soil conditions underlying the area of the infiltration trench were explored by the excavation of 2 test pits, TT-1 and TT-2 on July 22, 2005. The approximate test pit locations are shown on Figure 2. Details of the field exploration program and the test pit logs are included in Appendix A. The test pits were excavated using a backhoe to depths of 8 and 9 feet below the current ground surface. The test pits indicate that the site area is covered by approximately one foot of topsoil. The topsoil is underlain by a brown silty sand with some fine to coarse gravel. The material is medium dense and about 3 feet in thickness. This soil is in turn underlain by a gray silty sand with fine to coarse gravel and occasional cobbles. The material is dense to very dense and extends to the maximum depth of excavation. Based on our experience with this soil, we believe that it is glacially deposited and consolidated till. No groundwater was encountered in both test pits, to increase with depths. However, the moisture contents of the subsoils appear 2 S&EE 528rpt 4.0 INFILTRATION 4.1 IN -SITU INFILTRATION TEST We performed a total of three infiltration tests on July 22, 2004. The tests were performed per EPA falling head percolation test procedures (EPA 1980). The test locations are shown on Figure 2 which is included at the end of this report. The test results are shown below. Location Depth Soil Measured Infiltration Rate feet inch/minute IN-1 3 Brown silty sand with gravel 0.08 IN-2 3 Brown silty sand with gravel 0.125 IN-3 3 Brown silty sand with gravel 0.166 4.2 INFILTRATION RATE PER KING COUNTY SURFACE WATER MANUAL Based on the King County Surface Water Manual, the following factors shall be applied to the in -situ test values: Ftesting = 0.3 Fgeomet,y = 0.5 Fplugging = 0.7 That is, Design Infiltration Rate = Infiltration Rate* Ft. Seng * Fgeometry * Fpiugg;ng = 0.0087 inch/minute Please note this recommended value is derived from the lowest and not averaged values from the in -situ infiltration tests. The conservatism is necessary due to the presence of a relatively impermeable layer, (glacial till) at the shallow depth (4 feet). 528rpt 3 S&EE 5.0 CONCLUSIONS The test pit findings indicate that the site is underlain by dense to very dense glacial till (hardpan) at a shallow (4 feet) depth. The material is relatively impermeable. It is common in the Puget Sound area that perched groundwater develops over hardpan during wet seasons. The test pit results also reveal that the infiltration stratum - the brown silty sand located between the topsoil and the hardpan - is only three feet in thickness and has a relatively low infiltration rate. Based on the test pit findings and the infiltration test results, we are of the opinion that the site is not feasible for infiltration. We believe that a perched groundwater table may develop in the wet seasons. This water table would reduce the infiltration potential or make the system non-functional. Furthermore, due to the following reasons we believe that an infiltration system may result in seepage or surface water at the west -neighboring house: 1) the west -neighboring house is relatively close to the property line (about 10 feet); 2) the ground surface at the neighbor's house is about one to two feet lower than the site surface; and 3) the infiltration stratum is thin. 528rpt 4 S&EE $ 5 1 M 15f ST S 340Tr a 01JOUTR it S RL s 5 302NO 5T " $ PARK N! } P v'tr PL + y S 302H0 ST 'nay ,pS j • S 3fl157 `PL S 303RD ST s t fir' r a i z dr. 1 a s 3azKo 0 d 5 302N PL r w cl Ssr [i { 3o4rH S = 304TH 5T 'a 5 ; 304TH r PL ST 13n1r ROO- 'r 'a ST rr ,•dry n,05H H D.r S ME s 3U5TH PL w - s ° WAY Y a ys ROJ CT LO ., , r I C S 3$ .. 6 ST rN a ..' •"' S ram— -- •- Qd`----`--.w- .--- 309TH PL` cs ` ZIX ' a s `' 1 31 ? 310TH sT 310TH PL Ate m f rxe31; FSRat S 312THST S 312TH Hnn s 313TH sr V 4 STEEL s y ,any FEDE L N PL4 E LAKE p► ++ o f" . These pits were excavated to a depth of 8 and 9 feet using a Case 580 backhoe. A representative of S&EE was present throughout the exploration to excavate the pits and log the subsurface soil conditions. Test pits were backfilled with the excavated soils, which were placed in 2-foot thick lifts and compacted with the trackhoe bucket. Test pit logs are presented in this appendix.
