THE SITE IS CURRENTLY USED FOR PARKING FOR THE EXISTING SHOPPING CENTER. SITE DESIGN THE BUILDING SITE IS A LEVEL PAD WITH A STEEPLY BANKED SLOPE THAT RUNS THE FULL LENGTH OF ITS EASTERN BOUNDARY ALONG PACIFIC WAY SOUTH. COMMON ACCESS DRIVES FLANK THE PARCEL ON THE NORTH AND SOUTH. THESE ACCESS DRIVES FORM AN ELEVATED PROMONTORY OF SORTS. THIS ARRANGEMENT AFFORDS THE PUBLIC VIEWS OF THE BUILDING FROM THE NORTH, EAST AND SOUTH. THE BUILDING IS LONG AND ROUGHLY LINEAR, AND IT'S TUCKED IN AGAINST THE NORTH PROPERTY LINE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SITE WITH RESPECT TO VEHICULAR AND PEDESTRIAN ACCESS. VEHICLES ACCESS THE SITE FROM A DRIVE AISLE THAT RUNS ALONG THE PARCEL'S WESTERN PROPERTY LINE THAT IS SHARED WITH THE CENTER'S ADJACENT PARCELS. PEDESTRIANS ACCESS THE SITE VIA A PATH CONNECTING DIRECTLY TO PACIFIC WAY. THE DRIVE THRU WRAPS AROUND THE BUILDING ON THE EAST, NORTH AND WEST ELEVATIONS, THIS ARRANGEMENT MINIMIZES THE DRIVE-THROUGH'S IMPACT ON THE PARKING FIELD AND FRAMES THE BUILDING'S PUBLIC, SOUTHERN "FACE'. BUILDING DESIGN THE BUILDING IS MODERN. IT ESCHEWS THE TYPICAL "FAST FOOD' VERNACULAR IN FAVOR OF AN ARCHITECTURE THAT DIFFERENTIATES CHICK-FIL-A FROM ITS COMPETITION AND RENDERS PHYSICAL THE QUALITIES THAT MAKE CHICK-FIL-A UNIQUE. IT WAS CONCEIVED AS A SERIES OF INTERPENETRATING RECTANGULAR MASSES ARTICULATED WITH TALL PUNCHED OPENINGS AND CANTILEVERED CANOPIES AND CANVAS AWNINGS, THE MAIN DINING ROOM IS EXPRESSED AS GLAZED VOLUME SHELTERED BY A FLAT STEEL ARCH. THIS ELEMENT IS VISIBLE FROM PACIFIC WAY AND THE PARKING FIELD. THE KITCHEN, SERVING AND OTHER UTILITARIAN FUNCTIONS ARE PLACED AROUND THE DINING ROOM IN CLEARLY ARTICULATED VOLUMES. THE ARTICULATION OF THESE VOLUMES IS ACHIEVED THROUGH CONTRASTING COLORS, MATERIALS AND HEIGHT. THE SHAPES ARE SIMPLE, BUT THE ENSEMBLE IS MODULATED AND CAREFULLY COMPOSED. THE MATERIAL CHOICES REFLECT CHICK-FIL-A'S REGIONAL APPROACH TO THEIR STORES, THE MATERIALS, INCLUDING PLASTER, GLASS, CORRUGATED AND PLATE STEEL AND MASONRY ECHO THE EMERGING ECLECTIC DESIGN SENSIBILITY OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. BUILDING AND PEDESTRIAN ORIENTATION AS MENTIONED THE SITE IS ESSENTIALLY AN ELEVATED PROMONTORY. THE BUILDING 03 SITUATED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE DIFFERENCE IN ELEVATION BETWEEN THE PACIFIC WAY SOUTH AND THE BUILDING PAD, EACH OF THE BUILDINGS PRINCIPAL ELEVATIONS IS HIGHLY ARTICULATED, BUT THE SOUTHERN FAgADE IS CLEARLY THE PRINCIPAL FApADE, THE BUILDING'S FACE. ON THE EAST AND NORTH 7HE DRIVE THROUGH IS COMPLETELY SCREENED FROM THE STREET AND THE RETAINING FOR IT FORMS A PLINTH FOR THE BUILDING THAT STEPS DOWN TO THE STF:EET ACTING AS A BACKDROP FOR PLANTING AND MARKING THE BEGINNING OF THE ACCESSIBLE PATH PEDESTRIANS WOULD TRAVEL TO TAKE THEM FROM THE STREET TO THE RESTAURANT. THIS PATH FOLLOWS THE CROSS SLOPE UP FROM THE STREET AND LEADS TO A PUBLIC SEATING AREA WITH TABLES AND UMBRELLAS. THERE ARE PROMINENT STAIRS THAT AFFORD MORE IMMEDIATE ACCESS TO THIS AREA AS WELL. THE SEATING AREA IS OPEN AND CLEARLY VISIBLE FROM THE SIDEWALK AND STREET. THE LANDSCAPING ALONG THE PATH, STAIRS AND SEATING AREA COMPLIMENTS, BUT DOES NOT OBSCURE THE FUNCTIONS. AFTER ONE LEAVES THE SEATING AREA THE SLOPED PATH SWITCHES BACK, RUNS PAST THE PYLON SIGN FOR THE CENTER ;. dD CONTINUES UP TO A CROSS WALK THAT AFFORDS CLEAR ACCESS TO THE SIDEWALK IN FRONT OF THE BUILDING.
