Dear Ms. Mendoza:
The Community and Economic Development Department has been forwarded your recent inquiry to the Public
Works Action Request system. Several questions regarding the environmental classification of Lake Easter and
permitting requirements for vegetation management have been paraphrased(in bold)and answered by department
staff below.
1. What and where are the designated wetlands on the Lake Easter Estates property?
As shown on the enclosed Federal Way Zoning Map 37,a Category II wetland is shown on southeast
portion of the Lake Easter Estates property and fringe elements of that wetland system are shown on the
north portion of the property adjacent to Building 8,9, 10,and 11.Category II wetlands have a standard
buffer width of 100 feet.Please note these wetland locations are approximate and were established during
a 1998 city-wide study.
2. What are the permit requirements for trimming weeds and cutting down trees within 25 feet of the
lake?
Lake Easter is classified as a Regulated Lake by the city Critical Areas Ordinance and contains a
standard buffer width of 25 feet.Trimming weeds and tree cutting would typically be considered a permit
exempt residential maintenance activity within the lake buffer; but due to the presumed wetland areas
noted above and no recent delineation on file,a vegetation maintenance plan approved by the department
will be required. I've included a code interpretation that explains the procedures and plan requirements
for vegetation maintenance in critical areas. Please refer to page 3 for plan specifics. The department does
not currently charge a fee for vegetation maintenance plan review.
