(253) 835-7000 www. cityaffederalway. cam FILE The Community and Econornic Development Department has completed review of the potentially hazardous tree near the property of Mr. Sylwester Mroczek. The tree, an alder that is located behind a wetland buffer fence, appears to be in decline with thinning foliage and dying limbs. Mr. Mroczek has expressed concern that the tree may pose a threat to his home. Because the tree is located in a wetland buffer, any modification to it is subject to review by the Federal Way Community and Econornic the proper procedure and decision criteria for vegetation removal within identified critical areas. Decision Mr. Bryce LandrLid, an ISA Certified Arborist, has determined that in its current condition this tree is a safety liazard. Mr. Landrud has recommended that the tree be reduced to a safe wildlife snag h6ght of approximately 25 feet tall. Pursuant to Mr. Landrild's recommendation, in conjunction with an analysis of Interpretation #10-01, the city hereby authorizes a reduction in tree height to approximately 25 feet, leaving - the stump and root system 'In place. The reduction shall be accomplished using,, handheld power tools. Analysis of Interpretation #10-01 Criteria Approval criteria for Interpretation #10-0 1 are addressed below: 1. The proposed activity will not adversely affect water quality. Tree roots will not be disturbed and adequate erosion protection to the wetland will be retained. 2. The proposed activity will not destroy nor dainagge a significant habitat area. The tree is located within a wetland buffer. As such, it provides potential habitat to birds and small mammals. Reduction of the height of the tree will not Impact wildlife habitat. The tree will be converted to a wildlife snag, which will continue to function as a wildlife feature. The proposed activity will not adversely affect drainage or storinwater retention capabilities. The work will have no impact on drainage Courses.
