MINUTES
In attendance: Chair Vickie Chynoweth, Vice-Chair Karen Brugato, Janine Barber, Joe Clark,

Chair Chynoweth called the meeting to order at 9:07 a.m. Commissioner Barber MOTIONED TO
AMMEND a typo that was found in the May Minutes. Commissioner Bowman SECONDED THE
MOTION.
PUBLIC COMMENT
Ann Michelle Hart (Chief of Staff) of the Federal Way Public Market attended the meeting to share that
there will be an Event hosted by the FW Public Market from 6-9pm where guests can come and learn
more about the Pubic Market and ask any questions. She invites all of the Commissioners and encourages
them to attend.
COUNCIL LIAISON
None.
ACTION/NEW PROJECT – DISCUSSION ITEMS
1. Contract for Services –Commissioner Barber confirms that the contract for services application
has been submitted to finalize recommendations. Staff Geddes shares that it will be online and
ready to go by August.
2. Chronolog Artwork – Staff Geddes passes around the letter of support for the Chronolog
artwork for the commissioners to sign. Once the letter is signed it will be sent to Council.
3. Iam Tongi Letter of Support – Staff Geddes passes around the letter of support for Iam Tongi.
The commissioners were welcomed to sign and leave Iam a message of congratulations.
UPDATES
1. RWBF Arts Tent- Staff Swan requests for the commissioners to sign up for “shifts” for the Red
White and Blues Festival arts tent. She confirms that the tent will have sand art, posters and hats
to decorate. There will not be any ribbon crafts like last year.
2. Traffic Graffics – Staff Swan gave a brief update that the box by Dectaur High School has been
wrapped. Commissioner Barber asks if there will be a press release for the box. Staff Swan
confirms that there will be.
3. Municipal Courts Student Art Contest – Staff Swan reported that the Art Contest will take
place on June 20th and that a flyer for the event has been created. She invites the commissioners
to attend and she will be sending out an email reminder as the date approaches.
4. Arts Explosion Update – Vice Chair Brugato shares a quick rundown of the program for the
Arts Explosion. Chair Chynoweth confirms that she will be giving her opening remarks on Friday
at 5pm.Commissioner Byrnes confirms that he will be the MC for Saturday. Staff Swan shares
that ballots have been printed. Staff Geddes informs the commissioners that there is a $50/per day
charge for artwork that is not picked up after the event.
5. Staff Geddes’s Last Day – Staff Geddes announces that he has accepted the position of Parks
Director with the City of Puyallup and that this will be his last official meeting with the Arts
Commission. Staff Hutchinson has accepted the role of Recreation Manager and will now be
taking over Staff Geddes’ spot on the Arts Commission.
COMMISSION REPORTS
• Commissioner Barber pitches the idea of partnering with the Federal Way library in the future.
She has worked with the library for Make Music Day and believes that there is opportunity for
future partnerships for the Arts Commission.
• Chair Chynoweth informs the commission that Federal Way’s got talent will take place this
weekend. She has already found three judges to participate but she invites the commissioners to
attend if they can.
