Purpose
Establish a process and criteria for evaluating
proposals to name city property
Scope
Includes buildings, structures, real property (including
parks and open space)
Does not include historically significant property
already named, commissioned public art already
named, rights -of -way and streets, and rooms within
city hall

Statement how the proposal meets the criteria
Summary of public outreach that demonstrates wide
support
Staff will provide a cost estimate for the renaming, and
the Council must appropriate funding before
renaming
Criteria
Avoids similar names already used
Maybe based on location or distinctive natural
features
Common usage names that have developed over time,
e.g., topographical features, nearby schools, historical
plat names, shall be favored
Names of features indicated on general usage maps for
fifty years or more should only be changed when the
proposed name is supported by other City policies,
priorities, or initiatives
Criteria
Names based on historical significance:
• Associated with an event reflecting the broad pattern of
Federal Way's history;
• Associated with the lives of persons of citywide
significance in Federal Way's past;
• Reflects a distinctive architectural or engineering
achievement;
• Related to an existing or proposed registered historic
landmark; or
• Highlights previously under -documented or poorly
understood historical narratives.
Criteria
Maybe named as part of the City's objective to place
the issue of diversity before our citizens in a positive
manner
Maybe named for an individual or organization that
has made a significant contribution to the City of
Federal Way, and the naming is a stipulation of the
contribution
Criteria
Maybe named for individuals who have enhanced
the quality of life in Federal Way, including:
Leadership in civic organizations devoted to community
improvement;
Outstanding humanitarian work, such as assistance for
those who live with disabilities or are members of
underprivileged or economically disadvantaged
populations; or
Leadership in events and programs that have broadly
enriched the quality of life for Federal Way residents
Criteria
Portions of named property may have a name other
than that of the entire property (e.g., "The Knutzen
Family Theatre" located within Dumas Bay Centre).
