The building is a village of small structures reflecting the diversity that is Federal Way. Each major mass is identifiable by its function, but uses similar materials and elements to form a cohesive whole; they are essentially cut from the same cloth. Breaking up this large building into smaller components creates a more human -scaled Community Center. Windows along south facing walls of the lobbies, cafe, community and fitness areas provide a glimpse of center activities as well as views out. Low sloping roof forms provide shelter and scale to the larger forms of the building. Wood, metal and glass canopies and trellises identify entries and provide protection from elements. The building plan is organized around interior "streets," with gathering spaces at the intersections and ends (dashed on the plan at right). One street, the main building Lobby, extends from the main entrance to the Forest Room. It separates the Athletic Wing from the Community Wing. The second street connects these wings. It extends from the Cultural Gallery in the Community Wing to the Athletic Lobby of the Gymnasium and Climbing Wall. The Lobby is the focus of the Center. The Cafe across from the entry is an activity center and provides a key point for public views into the pool; it is the community gathering spot. The reception desk is strategically located with views to the Athletic Hall, the Cultural Gallery and the Forest Room. Offices with windows, for administrative staff, are behind the reception desk for staffing efficiency. Good visibility from the control point to the drop off area also allows staff to keep an eye on youth waiting for rides. The Forest Room at the end of the Lobby is a community living room and has comfortable furniture beside an inviting fireplace. Windows look out to the adjacent woods in Celebration Park. Doors open into a spacious Lounge for seniors. A consulting room for health care assistance and fitness assessments is nearby. The community spaces have their own entrance at the east end of the building to permit separate use after hours. Spaces here include a Community Room that will hold 280-360 people for a variety of activities. A catering kitchen is provided and this room can be subdivided for the use of multiple smaller groups. Doors open out to a patio facing southeast with room to seat an additional people and in fair weather the patio and landscaped araac ran rinl ihla thin ranarity of thin inctiria cnnra Main Entry Two classrooms seating 20 people each share a movable partition and can be combined into one room for larger groups. A third classroom is dedicated to arts and crafts activities for 35 individuals. The Classrooms and Senior Lounge surround an outdoor Arts Courtyard. The focal point of the Community Wing is the Cultural Gallery which doubles as both a pre -function space for the Community Room and as a room for art display. Spaces for children include a child care room staffed for short visits while parents are participating in fitness activities and classes. Adjacent to this are two pre-school classrooms. All three spaces share a fenced and semi -sheltered outdoor play area. The Lobby and Community Wing can be isolated from the remaining building with a rolling grille to allow flexible use after hours for social functions. A game room adjacent to the lobby will appeal to teens and seniors. Public restrooms are located nearby. Locker Rooms are provided for men, women and families or people with special needs. Between lockers and the pools are a steam room and sauna. The Climbing Wall opposite the stair is another focal point of the center, providing drama in a two story space with views to and from other activities. The Gymnasium, containing three middle -school -sized courts, is designed to allow flexibility of activities including pickleball, volleyball, basketball, aerobics and many others. Painted game lines on the floor also include a high school -size basketball court in the area of two of the middle school basketball courts. Divider curtains may be dropped to allow separate activities to occur simultaneously. A stair case and an elevator in the Athletic Lobby provide access to upper floor activities. A wall dividing the third court of the gymnasium is being considered as elected alternate to the project. The fitness area will have cardiovascular, circuit weight and free weights equipment. The space is designed for future flexibility and easy access to all equipment. An aerobics room is provided for that activity as well as dance and martial arts for 40-45 people. Several walls will have mirrors, and others windows to allow views into other spaces. The jog -walk track is suspended from the gymnasium walls and roof and is accessed from the upper level. The track is 3 lanes wide and approximately 12 laps per mile in length. STATEMENT OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN INTENT Community Entry The Leisure Pool is a key feature of attraction to people of all ages for recreation, play and therapy activities. A central area includes a variety of water depth, interactive play features, and an exciting water slide. An attached pool offers two lap lanes for swim meet warm-up, water sports and therapy. A current channel provides for resistance swimming and walking for adults and tube riding for kids. A Spa offers hot water therapy for 10-12 persons -Lounge fumitureis provided on the deck for casual viewing and relaxing. The Lap Pool is has six lanes, each 25 yards long. Starting blocks, bench seating and deck staging space are provided to support swim meets and team practice. A 1 meter diving board is provided for recreation and competitive use. Both the Leisure and the Lap pools will be accessible for disabled patrons and have access to the outdoor patio which faces the forest. An integral idea in the plan is Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). The intent is to increase the chance of being seen in order to minimize illicit and/ or dangerous activities.
