1. CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 2:01pm.
2. PUBLIC COMMENT
• None.
3. COMMISSIONER'S COMMENTS
• Chair Bostic informed that there is a new editor at the federal way mirror, and passed out a
form from the federal way mirror to promote/inform of events the senior commission is
presenting. forms were also passed out for recommendations to Steel Lake and Brooklake
parks. Chair Bostic also introduced the newest senior advisory commissioner, David
Reynolds.
• Vice chair North mentioned the neighborhood connection meetings and if anyone was
aware what happened to these meetings.
• Commissioner Harvey asked if an updated roster could be sent out. she also reminded
everyone again to check the accuracy of your information when speaking to the federal way
mirror.
• Commissioner Fields commented on his completion of OPMA training.
4. COMMISSION BUSINESS
A. APPROVAL OF SEPTEMBER 13, 2023 AND OCTOBER 11, 2023 MEETING MINUTES.
Commissioner North moved to approve the meeting minutes as presented; second by
Commissioner Fields. The motion passed unanimously.
B. SENIOR COMMISSION CONNECTION PLANNING (NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER)
Commissioner Volheim stated for the November meeting, a few Arts Commissioners will be at
the event. Steel Lake is to host lunch, and the presenter will start at noon. Chair must open and
close the meeting and minutes must be taken.
Commissioner Harvey requested more books for Novembers' meeting
Commissioner Dziak asked for clarification to why October's Connection meeting had to be
declared a "meeting."

• Commissioner Harvey gave suggestions for December's meeting. Amy to create a flyer and send
an email to Commissioners requesting their top 3 ideas to start compiling a list for December's
meeting. The continuance and cadence of the 2024 Senior Connection Meetings was also
discussed.
C. HOLIDAY SENIOR OUTREACH PLANNING
• Last year's event the Commission partnered with Avalon, is that something the Commission
would like for this year? The Commission may be interested in involving the Senior Center. The
Commission would also like the City to play a larger role- Amy is to research that possibility.
• Chair Bostic to contact Avalon and report back
D. COMMISSION RETREAT PLANNING
• Deputy Mayor Honda informed the Commission that in order for the Mayor to approve the use to
Dumas Bay as a location, the Commission must provide a scope and purpose for the Commission
retreat.
• Commissioner Dziak motioned the scope and purpose would be team bonding of the Senior
Commission along with the 2024 planning of the Senior Commission to be held sometime in
February or March, at Dumas Bay Center, and serving approximately 10-12 people
(commissioners.) Second by Commissioner Harvey. The motion passed unanimously.
E. SENIOR HEALTH AND RESOURCE FAIR PLANNING
a) Development of Sub -Committee
• Commissioners Foreman, Reynolds, Harvey, and North volunteered for the
Sub -Committee, the first meeting is anticipated after January 1.
b) Drafting of Vendor and Sponsor Letters
• Discussion was had regarding the number of speakers, there is a request to
have more vendors for the next resource fair. Should there be parameters
for the vendors for what type of vendors we have and how many? Would
vendors be interested in a raffle? Conversation regarding food trucks and
PAEC outside food regulations and how food and refreshments could be
provided.
c) Date/Time Planning
• The Commission would like to reserve the PAEC for May 16th. Conversation
was had around the time. Most Commissioners noticed that most visitors
came and left before the lunch hour, with a few wanting entrance before the
event started. Last year's event was scheduled between 10am-3pm and the
Commission would like the even to end earlier than 3pm.
d) Location Planning
• The Commission would like to hold the event at the PAEC again.
F. CANCELLATION OF DECEMBER MEETING
Commissioner North moved to keep the Senior Advisory Commission meeting in
December; second by Commissioner Dziak. Motion passed unanimously.
5. STAFF REPORT
Deputy Mayor Honda stated the Commission has 3 alternate openings.

Senior Helpers has a ribbon -cutting ceremony this Friday at 3pm, Deputy Mayor is to
drop off a stack of books.
6. OTHER BUSINESS
• Commissioner Dziak mentioned the recent purse snatchings in the area and asked if there
was anything the Commission could do. Deputy Mayor Honda will see if the Police
department can present at the next Senior Commission meeting.
• Commissioner Harvey mentioned she and a few others received letters from King County
that seemed suspicious. Deputy Mayor stated these letters went sent by King County in
error, and the Commission can reach out to King County Council, King County Senior
Division, or King County Elections for more information.
• Commissioner Reynolds was interested in educating seniors in computer literacy. The King
County library once had classes. Commissioner Harvey asked if these classes could be
similar to the Financial Literacy classes held at the Community Center. Deputy Mayor
Honda to check to see if this could be a possibility.
• Commissioner Fields inquired about Channel 21 and if there was a way to reach the senior
population in some fashion via Channel 21. Deputy Mayor Honda to see who handles
Channel 21 and if they can speak during January's Senior Commission Meeting.
• Commissioner Harvey inquired about Commission Commitment and if the by-laws
regarding attendance should be updated.
• Deputy Mayor encouraged the Commission if there is a report the Commission would like
to be presented at Council, to please send a report. The Commission has not been
providing reports.
7. NEXT MEETING -Wednesday, December 13, 2024 at 2pm in the Hylebos Conference Room.
8. ADJOURN -The meeting adjourned at 3:47pm.

• Arts Commission Chair Vickie Chynoweth presented about the Arts Commission, its
involvement in the community and where to view artwork by local artists.
4. NEXT SENIOR COMMISSION CONNECTION -Wednesday, December 20, 2024 at 10am at the
Federal Way Community Center in the Senior Lounge.
5. ADJOURN -The meeting adjourned at 12:27pm.
