11-08-2023 - Senior Advisory - Minutes APPROVEDCIT Federal Way Centered on Opportunity SENIOR ADVISORY COMMISSION SUMMARY Wednesday, November 8 2023 Hylebos Conference Room, 2:OOpm Commissioners Present: Chair Lana Bostic, Vice Chair Catherine North, Commissioner Debbie Harvey, Commissioner Vicky Foreman, Commissioner Frank Fields, Commissioner Tammy Dziak, Commissioner Cheryl Volheim Absent: Commissioner Kenneth Pratt Staff Present: Deputy Mayor Susan Honda, Office Manager Samantha Homan CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 2:01pm. 2. PUBLIC COMMENT ■ None. 3. COMMISSIONER'S COMMENTS • Chair Bostic informed that there is a new editor at the federal way mirror, and passed out a form from the federal way mirror to promote/inform of events the senior commission is presenting. forms were also passed out for recommendations to Steel Lake and Brooklake parks. Chair Bostic also introduced the newest senior advisory commissioner, David Reynolds. • Vice chair North mentioned the neighborhood connection meetings and if anyone was aware what happened to these meetings. • Commissioner Harvey asked if an updated roster could be sent out. she also reminded everyone again to check the accuracy of your information when speaking to the federal way mirror. • Commissioner Fields commented on his completion of OPMA training. 4. COMMISSION BUSINESS A. APPROVAL OF SEPTEMBER 13, 2023 AND OCTOBER 11, 2023 MEETING MINUTES. Commissioner North moved to approve the meeting minutes as presented; second by Commissioner Fields. The motion passed unanimously. B. SENIOR COMMISSION CONNECTION PLANNING (NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER) Commissioner Volheim stated for the November meeting, a few Arts Commissioners will be at the event. Steel Lake is to host lunch, and the presenter will start at noon. Chair must open and close the meeting and minutes must be taken. Commissioner Harvey requested more books for Novembers' meeting Commissioner Dziak asked for clarification to why October's Connection meeting had to be declared a "meeting." Page 1 of 3 Senior Helpers has a ribbon -cutting ceremony this Friday at 3pm, Deputy Mayor is to drop off a stack of books. 6. OTHER BUSINESS • Commissioner Dziak mentioned the recent purse snatchings in the area and asked if there was anything the Commission could do. Deputy Mayor Honda will see if the Police department can present at the next Senior Commission meeting. • Commissioner Harvey mentioned she and a few others received letters from King County that seemed suspicious. Deputy Mayor stated these letters went sent by King County in error, and the Commission can reach out to King County Council, King County Senior Division, or King County Elections for more information. • Commissioner Reynolds was interested in educating seniors in computer literacy. The King County library once had classes. Commissioner Harvey asked if these classes could be similar to the Financial Literacy classes held at the Community Center. Deputy Mayor Honda to check to see if this could be a possibility. • Commissioner Fields inquired about Channel 21 and if there was a way to reach the senior population in some fashion via Channel 21. Deputy Mayor,Honda to see who handles Channel 21 and if they can speak during January's Senior Commission Meeting. • Commissioner Harvey inquired about Commission Commitment and if the by-laws regarding attendance should be updated. • Deputy Mayor encouraged the Commission if there is a report the Commission would like to be presented at Council, to please send a report. The Commission has not been providing reports. 7. NEXT MEETING - Wednesday, December 13, 2024 at 2pm in the Hylebos Conference Room. 8. ADJOURN - The meeting adjourned at 3:47pm.
