Funland is showing its age and several features are no longer functional and the structure is in need of repairs and upgrades. The Department believes in keeping each park safe and up to date with modern amenities. The overall structure is still very sound and an in depth assessment by the original Architect; Leathers and Associates concluded that it would be more economical to renovate and upgrade the structure rather than replace it. Project: Renovate the existing structure with modern composite materials and updated features. The safety surfaces within the structures will feature a pour in place type porous rubber in the Tot/ADA area and around the Ability Whirl. The main structure will have an engineered wood play chip as the safety surface. Some of the new upgrades will include a 12' perimeter sidewalk that will support better ADA access to benches, tables, and activity panels the user can engage with. In addition a spinning platform called the "Ability Whirl" will be incorporated into the south side of the perimeter walk. This feature will allow both wheel chairs and able bodied children to engage in an activity. The design and finished structure will conform to the current safety and accessibility guidelines (ASTM 1487, CPSC Pub. No. 325), and will also conform to all ADA requirements.
