Federal Way Centered on Opportunity SENIOR ADVISORY COMMISSION SUMMARY Wednesday, December 13, 2023 Hylebos Conference Room, 2:00pm Commissioners Present: Chair Lana Bostic, Vice Chair Catherine North, Commissioner Debbie Harvey, Commissioner Vicky Foreman, Commissioner Frank Fields, Commissioner Kenneth Pratt, Commissioner Cheryl Volheim, Commissioner David Reynolds Absent: Commissioner Tammy Dziak Staff Present: Deputy Mayor Susan Honda, Amy Glandon Citizens Present: Colleen .Chinen, Terri Cleveland (Remote) CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 2:00pm. 2. PUBLIC COMMENT o Terri Cleveland introduced herself as working with Meridian Court for low-income seniors. She is participating remotely as she lives outside the state. 3. COMMISSIONER'S COMMENTS Chair Bostic showed the senior coverage in the Mirror and commented about receiving a Thank You Note from Mayor Ferrell for volunteering. Commissioner Volheim mentioned that someone approached her regarding a Parkinson's Support Group in Federal Way and asked if this was something that the Commission could help with. She will get additional information and report back. Commissioner Harvey brought up the Property Tax Program where seniors can earn discounts to their property taxes. It will require further research as to whether this is available in Federal Way. • Commissioner Fields passed out holiday calendars to the Commission. • Vice -Chair North mentioned that 2 of the kids that were part of her holiday gift program have relocated to Portland and she was looking for assistance with delivery of gifts. Commissioner Reynolds requested a master mailing list to be able to outreach to seniors. Per Ms. Glandon, this list would have to be built by the Commission as one does not exist currently. Vice -Chair North left the meeting briefly at 2:07pm and returned at 2:10pm. Chair Bostic left the meeting briefly at 2:12pm and returned at 2:13pm. 4. COMMISSION BUSINESS A. APPROVAL OF NOVEMBER 8, 2023 MEETING MINUTES Vice -Chair North moved approval of the meeting minutes as presented; second by Commissioner Volheim. Motion passed unanimously. B. APPROVAL OF NOVEMBER 15, 2023 SENIOR COMMISSION CONNECTION MEETING MINUTES Page 1 of 3 Vice -Chair North moved approval of the meeting minutes as presented; second by Commissioner Harvey. Motion passed unanimously. C. UPDATE ON COMMISSION RETREAT • The activity for the retreat was discussed between a Murder Mystery Party or a painting activity. By show of hands, voting between the two was taken. The painting activity passed with 8 votes. ■ The business to be conducted at the meeting includes the editing of the brochure for finalization and printing in the Spring. • Food and catering was discussed. Ms. Glandon to speak with Dumas Bay in regards to potluck option and to send in the contract. Chair Bostic left the meeting briefly at 2:30pm and returned at 2:35pm. D. HOLIDAY SENIOR OUTREACH • Discussion of needs was presented, and agreed for Ms. Glandon to accompany members of the Commission to purchase items for the holiday bags for the Federal .Way Senior Center. Commissioner Fields moved to allow spending not to exceed $1,100 for the purchase of these items; second by Commissioner Reynolds. Motion passed unanimously. ■ The outreach event will be held at the Federal Way Senior Center on Thursday, December 21 at 11am. E. SENIOR COMMISSION CONNECTION SCHEDULING CHANGES ■ Commissioner Harvey noted that the Connection events have been successful, and that there was talk to move to a quarterly occurrence rather than staying monthly. Commissioner Fields moved to move the Connection events to a quarterly occurrence; second by Commissioner Harvey. Motion passed unanimously. ■ The next Connection occurrence was discussed, and suggested for a March occurrence due to the holidays and the busy month of February. Commissioner Reynolds moved to schedule the next Connection event in March; second by Commissioner Harvey. Motion passed unanimously. ■ Discussion regarding the December 20 Connection event was brought forth by Commissioner Volheim. The planning and execution were agreed on, and one thing that was brought up was having applications to join the Commission and Senior Events printed for attendees to have access to. F. SENIOR HEALTH & RESOURCE FAIR PLANNING • Vice -Chair North noted that the date at the PAEC will be Thursday, May 16, 2024, however the subcommittee is not set to meet until January. A date in January was chosen by members of the subcommittee, to be held on Wednesday, January 10 at 1pm in the Hylebos Room. Vice -Chair North also mentioned that she spoke with Brian Hoffman and he mentioned that vendors could pre -purchase lunch boxes for a more substantial meal. G. KCLS BASIC COMPUTER TRAINING & HELP SESSIONS • Commissioner Reynolds mentioned that he spoke with Maggie Crelling at the library and that they have 6 computers in a private room dedicated to computer literacy training. He is interested in getting the word out and setting up times to help seniors learn how to get connected. He said that he would follow-up with Ms. Crelling after the first of the new year and report back. Amy Glandon left the meeting briefly at 3:21pm and returned at 3:24pm. E. MIRROR SENIOR COVERAGE DISCUSSION Ms. Glandon noted that Keelin Everly-Lang of the Federal Way Mirror is interested in expanding senior coverage. Chair Bostic suggested that the Commission invite Ms. Everly-Lang to the January meeting in order to have a further discussion on senior matters with her. Page 2 of 3 Chair Bostic briefly left the meeting at 3:35pm and returned at 3:36pm. 5. STAFF REPORT Ms. Glandon passed out the certificates of appointment to Commissioners Fields, Pratt & Reynolds and congratulated them on their appointments. Deputy Mayor Honda noted that the Federal Way Mirror would be having their Coffee & Conversations meeting at Poverty Bay and encouraged the Commission to attend. She also made a plea to get the word out about the Utility Tax Rebate Program offered by the City. The next application period opens on January 1 and runs through May 30. Ms. Glandon to send out information regarding the program. 6. OTHER BUSINESS ■ None. 7. NEXT MEETING - Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at 2pm in the Hylebos Conference Room. 8.
