YC Minutes 11-09-2023CITY OF FEDERAL WAY YOUTH COMMISSION Thursday, November 9th, 2023 Birthday party Room 5:00 p.m. Federal Way Community Center MEETING MINUTES Commissioner Juarez called the meeting to order at 5:06pm. Present: Aissata Bangoura, Juan Juarez, Satinder Singh Grewal, Sienna Mayo, Karis Song, Zarah Imani Dennis, Maleha Tasnim Absent: Winston Nguyen (excused) Staff: Kim Ledyard (Community Recreation Coordinator), David Clemons (Dumas Bay Manager), Breanna Bigelow (Administrative Assistant) PUBLIC COMMENT Ann-Michelle Hart from the Federal Way Public Market shares a message about the electrical box wrapping project that the Federal Way Arts Commission is working on. She thinks it could be valuable for the Youth Commission to provide input for the project. COMMISSION BUSINESS All Commissioners vote to approve the minutes from the previous meeting. Steven Curry, Multi-Service Center Steven Curry did not attend the meeting. Appoint Vice-Chair Clemons explains that the Vice-Chair acts as Chair when the Chair is absent, and will most likely become Chair next year. Commissioners Bangoura, Mayo, and Tasnim volunteer to be Vice-Chair. Commissioners take a vote, and Commissioner Bangoura receives the most votes. Commissioner Juarez motions to approve Commissioner Bangoura as Vice-Chair. Commissioner Song seconds the motion. Create Groups to research teen event and fundraising ideas All commissioners would like to do a raffle basket fundraiser. Commissioner Bangoura states that Chick-Fil-A and Baskin Robbins might offer gifts cards for the raffle basket. Commissioner Bangoura also suggests Youth Commission have a booth at Jingle Bell Brunch and the Tree Lighting Ceremony on Saturday, December 2nd to sell snacks and/or drinks. Commissioners Juarez, Bangora, Ngyuen, and Grewal will make plans and gather donations for Jingle Bell Brunch. Commissioners Dennis, Mayo, Song, and Tasnim will plan and gather donations for the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Ledyard requests that the commissioners let her know their plans as soon as possible so she can inform the Events Coordinator. Cinemark Price Update Commissioner Juarez spoke to the manager of the Cinemark Century Federal Way theater regarding pricing. The cost for 50 people can range between $525 and $775. Clemons asks the Commissioners if they can get enough Youth Commission, November 9th, 2023 Page 2 attendance to recover initial costs and make a profit. Commissioner Song and Mayo suggest planning an event with lower overhead costs. All commissioners agree and will focus on planning a different event. NEXT MEETING/ AGENDA ITEMS The next regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 11th at the Federal Way Community Center.
