MEETING MINUTES
Clemons called the meeting to order at 5:10pm.
Present: Aissata Bangoura, Juan Juarez, Satinder Singh Grewal, Sienna Mayo, Winston Nguyen
Absent: Karis Song (excused), Zarah Imani Dennis (unexcused)
Staff: Kim Ledyard (Community Recreation Coordinator), David Clemons (Dumas Bay Manager), Breanna Bigelow
(Administrative Assistant), Ashriya Guptar (Administrative Assistant)
PUBLIC COMMENT
Ann-Michelle Hart from the Federal Way Public Market presents their plan for bringing a Public Market to Federal
Way. The Federal Way Public Market wants input and ideas from youth regarding what they want to see at the
Public Market.
COMMISSION BUSINESS
All Commissioners vote to approve the minutes from the previous meeting.
Youth Commission Overview
Commissioner Juarez explains what Youth Commission is to the new commissioners. Youth Commission meets on
the second Thursday of each month, commissioners plan events, and represents youth to City Officials.
Commissioner Mayo adds that Youth Commission raises funds for the Firstep Scholarship.
Chair and Vice-Chair Appointments
Commissioner Juarez was appointed Chair of Youth Commission due to his seniority on the Commission.
Discussion about the Vice-Chair position was tabled until next meeting, when more Commissioners are in
attendance.
2023-2024 Youth Commission Workplan
Ledyard explains that Youth Commission must create a workplan to present to City Council in October. The
workplan should have plans that are attainable within the school year or can carry over into future years.
Commissioner Juarez proposes fundraising for the Firstep Scholarship by collecting donations and creating a raffle
basket, similar to what last year’s Commission did. Commissioners discussed hosting a movie night at Cinemark in
the Commons Mall. Commissioner Mayo suggests that the workplan consist of one fundraising event, one raffle
basket, and hosting one teen event. Commissioner Mayo motions to approve the suggested workplan.
Commissioner Nguyen seconds the motion.
