CONDITIONS:
All signs must be installed/modified and final inspection passed within 45 days of the issuance of this permit to prevent
reactivation of violation order 00-106083-00.
This permit is issued based on the information provided by the applicant. Since property lines cannot be verified
without a survey, the property owner, his/her heirs or assigns shall assume all liability for any relocation or any other
associated costs should the sign be located in public right-of-way or within the required yard setback.
The required setback from property lines for all signs shall be not less than 5' in residential zones and not less than 3' in
all other zones.
Signs should be constructed & installed so that angle irons, guywires, braces & other structural elements are not
visible. This does NOT apply to structural elements that are an integral part of the overall design. (FWCC, 22-1602(A))
FINAL SIGN INSPECTION IS REQUIRED in order to receive the sign registration sticker. Please call 253-835-3050 to
schedule the inspection.

New Sign Construction or Existing Sign Improvement
This process information pertains to the construction or improvement of freestanding or building mounted
signs. Required setbacks, height limitations, and other sign code information can be obtained from the Land
Use Division of Community Development Services (CDS). Building code information may be obtained from the
Building Division of CDS. Sign permits expire one year from the date of issuance.
ALL information and plans must be provided before the application can be accepted.
I. SIGN PERMIT APPLICATION
A. Form: Complete the Sign Permit Application form. Any space left blank will delay permit
processing.
B. Fee: A plan check fee is due upon submittal of a complete permit application. Contact the
Development Specialists (253-661-4115), for the exact fee amount.
II. REQUIRED PLANS
You must submit two sets of the following:
A. Site Plan: An overall site plan (24" x 36" paper, minimum scale 1"= 20') showing the proposed
structure in plan view (see site plan example, Figure 1). See the Sign Permit Application Checklist
(other side of this sheet) for detailed plan requirements.
B. Building Elevations Plans: (Applies only to building mounted signs.) An elevation drawing
for each building face to which a sign will be affixed (see elevation plan example, Figure 2A and 2B).
See the Sign Permit ARNication Checklist (other side of this sheet) for detailed plan requirements.

C. Free Standing Sign Construction Plans: (Applies only to free standing signs.) An elevation
drawing for each freestanding sign to be constructed). See the Sign Permit Application Checklist
(other side of this sheet) for detailed plan requirements. (minimum scale 1/8 1', connection
details minimum scale 1/4"= 1')
III. SIGN CONSTRUCTION SHALL NOT CONTAIN OR USE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:
A. Exposed incandescent lamps exceeding 25 watts
B. Exposed incandescent lamps with external or internal reflectors
C. Continuous or sequential flashing devices or operation
D. Incandescent lamps inside an internally illuminated sign, except for changing message centers
E. External light sources directed towards or shining on vehicular or pedestrian traffic or on a street
F. Internal illumination using 800 milliamp or larger ballasts if the lamps are spaced closer than 12
inches on center
G. Internal illumination using 425 milliamp or larger ballasts if the lamps are spaced closer than six
inches on center
IV. INSPECTION/REGISTRATION (Inspection request number is 253-661-4140)
A. Signs with foundations require a foundation inspection. Rough electrical will be inspected at the time
of foundation inspection, if appropriate.
B. A final sign and/or electrical inspection is required and must be scheduled to register all signs.
C. After a sign has passed its final inspection, a registration sticker will be affixed to the sign. Signs
without a registration sticker have not received final approval. Please contact our office if you have a
sign that has been inspected but not registered.

Dear Ms. Henry:
The City of Federal Way received the above referenced sign permit on March 19, 2001. I have
completed a preliminary zoning review of the permit. There are two issues that need to be
resolved before review of the permit can continue.
1. Sign A (the existing sign to be modified into a conforming tenant directory) is a
monument style sign. Sign B is an existing pole sign. You have proposed to modify sign
B into a monument style sign. The plans need to indicate the sign base material for each
sign. The Federal Way City Code Section 22-1602(c)(3)a (enclosed) requires that the
sign base be made of an architectural material such as textured concrete, stucco, or brick
OR be harmonious with the primary structure on the property. Please let me know how
both sign A and B meet this requirement.
2. Sign B does not currently meet the required three foot setback from the property line. On
your site plan detail, the new proposed location for the sign is shown as 10 feet from the
curb. In this location, the sign still does not meet the required setback. I have enclosed
the site plan detail for your reference. Please redraw the plan indicating that the sign will
meet the required three foot setback. Please also provide a point of measurement (for
example, the distance between the back of sidewalk and the property line).

Dear Ms. Henry:
Thank you for your resubmittal of May14, 2001. I am, however, still unclear on the two issues
addressed in my letter of March 28, 2001.
The resubmitted plans do not address how the bases of signs A and B meet the code requirement
of Federal Way City Code Sec. 22-1602(c)(3)a (enclosed with my previous letter). The sign
bases must be made of architectural materials such as textured concrete, stucco, or brick OR be
harmonious with the primary structure on the property. Please also be aware that the sign base
must be a minimum of twenty percent of the overall sign height. Signs A and B do seem to meet
the 20% base requirement, but the material must be clearly indicated. Painted sheet metal is not
considered an architectural material for the purposes of sign permit review.
The resubmitted site plan detail for sign B indicates a ten -foot setback. It is not clear from the
drawing whether you intend the ten feet to be the setback from the property line to the sign, or
the setback from the curb to the sign. It is also not clear what is intended as the point of
measurement for locating the property line in the field.
Please resubmit revised plans clearly addressing these issues prior to May 30, 2001. If all
required materials are not received, then the sign permit will be denied and the application will
no longer be valid. The notice and order (VO#00-106083-00) will also be reactivated at that
time, and the business owner may be subject to monetary penalties under that notice and order.
