Review Today’s Goals Deputy Mayor Jeanne Burbidge II. A Brief Overview of the Mayor’s Goals Mayor Jim Ferrell THIS DISCUSSION IS EXPECTED TO LAST 10 MINUTES Are there any questions for Mayor Ferrell? Economic Development: The City’s Vision and Role Council/Mayor/Patrick Doherty THIS DISCUSSION IS EXPECTED TO LAST 90 MINUTES Overview: What initiatives is the City currently engaged Mayor Jim Ferrell/Patrick in? What are the intended outcomes? What might the impact of these engagements on City resources? The Council is interested in strengthening relations with Councilmembers the Chamber of Commerce and businesses throughout Federal Way. More specifically, what are the City’s interests and needs in working more closely with the Chamber? What would closer cooperation look like? How do we get there? What are the City’s interests in strengthening relations Councilmembers with the business community? What outcomes is the Council seeking? What steps could initiate improved communication, collaboration and cooperation? Break - 10 Minutes V. Update on the Performing Arts and Conference Center Blue Ribbon Committee THIS DISCUSSION IS EXPECTED TO LAST 30 MINUTES Mayor Ferrell recently appointed a Blue Ribbon Committee to advise the City about a Performing Arts and Conference Center (PACC). A representative of the Committee will briefly update the Council on its process, timeline, and any preliminary findings from the Committee’s early information- gathering and discussions. VI. City Involvement in a Summer Festival Council/Mayor THIS DISCUSSION IS EXPECTED TO LAST 30 MINUTES Some Councilmembers have expressed an interest in continuing Festival Days or a similar summertime celebration? What role might the City need to play to ensure that there is a festival in Federal Way during the summer? Who might the City partner with to promote, sponsor, or manage it? What time of the summer might be preferable? What activities and events might be included? 3 VII. Public Comments on This Morning’s Discussions Citizens THIS SESSION IS EXPECTED TO LAST 10 MINUTES If there are any citizens in attendance, the Council and Mayor would appreciate hearing your reactions to and comments about the issues we’ve discussed this morning. VIII. Discuss Town Square Council/Mayor/Patrick Doherty THIS DISCUSSION IS EXPECTED TO LAST 75 MINUTES At last year’s strategic planning meeting the Council expressed interest in developing the Town Square Site (formerly the AMC Theatre property) into a four-acre park and a four-acre multi-level, mixed used urban development. Since then, discussions with representatives of the development/building community have indicated that the kind of urban development in Town Square that was envisioned last year may not be feasible. Starting with the 50% of the property the City envisions as Mayor Ferrell parkland, what’s the current thinking regarding how the park could be developed over time? How could developing a park relate to or trigger development of the rest of the property? What is the status of talks with developers regarding market Councilmembers/Patrick conditions for developing the remaining 50% of Town Square? What have we learned from those discussions? What is the Council’s vision for the property? How does it relate to the vision for downtown and the broader community? IX. Rebranding the City Council/Mayor THIS DISCUSSION IS EXPECTED TO LAST 30 MINUTES What are the City’s interests in rebranding itself? What key messages does the City need to be communicate to its 4 residents, business owners, tourists, and others who may be interested in Federal Way? How might those messages influence the new brand? What should be the next steps and timeline for launching this effort? X.
