Youth Comm 01-21-2015 MinsCITY OF FEDERAL WAY YOUTH COMMISSION Wednesday January 21, 2015 Party Rooms 5:00 p.m. Federal Way Community Center MEETING MINUTES David Schmidt called the meeting to order at 5:01pm. Present: Alex Kinzner, Alyssa Odom, Anastassia Kostin, Erynn Littlefield, Sandra Ojeaburu, Isaiah Bush, Christopher Chung, Mohammed Ramzan, Judy Kim, Robert McFarlane, Jesse Goldstone Guests: Susan Honda – Council Member, Lydia Assefa-Dawson – Council Member, Martin Moore, Council Member Staff: David Schmidt – Senior and teen services coordinator, Kevin Hutchinson – Inclusion coordinator, David Clemons – Administrative Assistant, Debbie Lusebrink – Administrative Assistant PUBLIC COMMENT None. COMMISSION BUSINESS 2015 Work Plan Unanimous approval by commission members. Seahawks Rally at City Hall on January 30th Council member Honda reminded commissioners to spread the word about the event. Commissioners Erin, Anastasia, and Alyssa volunteered to work at the Daughter’s Night Out event. Commissioners Erin, Jesse, and Robert volunteered to work at the Pirate Party event. Parks Appreciation Day event Preliminary discussion. All members will be available to attend except Commissioner Erin. Fundraising opportunities Suggestions for where to fundraise included FW public schools, and bringing food goods and clothing from home to each meeting. Possible organizations for the donations are: FW Homeless shelters, Fusion, Reachout, and the MSC. A decision to who the items will be donated to will be decided upon later. Anti-Bullying Someone will reach out to anti-bullying speakers who have come to the FW schools to come and speak at Summer Camp. Booths with pamphlets and support set up at local events like Farmer’s Markets and RW&B festival. Take part in National Day of Silence. Homework project given to source more opportunities to promote anti-bullying. Teen Travel program through recreation department Youth Commission, January 21, 2015 ______________ Page 2 First trip/activity tentatively scheduled June 2015. Several members expressed concern about cost and accessibility. Members discussed fundraising to create a scholarship fund. Trip suggestions include High-Fly, Ski trips, Seattle underground tour, College campus tours. Advertising for the teen programs could be done at Farmer’s Markets, RW&B festival, FWCC catalogue and bulletin boards. Council member Honda will see if a free booth can be attained at the farmer’s markets. Homework project given to source potential fundraising opportunities. Adopt a Family No information yet. This will be discussed at a later meeting. Hylebos Wetlands Park is still damaged and needing volunteer help. More details will be shared at a future meeting. New commission members There is a possibility new members will be selected in the fall. Council member Honda stated a new application process has been implemented for selecting commissioners. NEXT MEETING/AGENDA ITEMS The next meeting is scheduled for February 18, 2015.
