Commissioners Alex, Jesse, Robert, Chris, and Erynn volunteered their time for the event. Food/Clothing Drive Commissioner Anastassia stated she felt each commissioner should set an individual goal to collect a certain number of items. All commissioners agreed they would collect a minimum of 10 items for the drive. Hutchinson encouraged commissioners to bring items that weren’t the typical donations (cans of corn, green beans, etc.) to help provide more of an assortment for those who use food banks. Vice Chair Alyssa stated her church group had done a food/clothing drive and had also made pb&j sandwiches to donate to a mission. She would like to see the YC do something similar. No confirmation of whether that is something the YC will participate in or not. Youth Commission, March 18, 2015 _______ Page 2 Teen Program Hutchinson reported there are no scheduled activities included in the new Spring/Summer recreation catalogue. He informed the group that if enough money can be raised there was a possibility of having up to two events/trips added before the end of summer. He wants all commissioners to pick trips they would like to see included as possibilities, recommending things/places teens might not normally get to participate in and/or go. Commissioner Anastassia stated she would like to see a trip to Leavenworth, Rattlesnake Ridge, Snoqualmie, Ocean Shores. Chair Erynn stated high schools require outside organizations to offer senior class trips. Social Media Hutchinson brought up creating a Facebook page for the YC. He is uncertain what the restrictions are from the City and will follow-up in later meetings with more information. Vice Chair Alyssa recommended having a Twitter account for YC. She feels it may reach a broader audience. Commissioner Anastassia would like to see posts on the FWCC Facebook page for YC business and events. Anti-Bullying Campaign Commissioner Anastassia visited website for the Day of Silence. She brought several examples of flyers and handouts for the event. Hutchinson informed commissioners they would be allowed to use FWCC resources to print flyers, handouts, etc. for related activities. Commissioner Anastassia stated the website had several items for sale, such as T-shirts, wristbands, stickers, etc. Commissioners collectively agreed they would source their own materials rather than purchase them. Since the National Day of Silence is scheduled during spring break, Commissioner Jesse motioned to participate April 13 – 15 with Chair Erynn seconding the motion. They will report back on our next scheduled meeting date regarding their participation and individual experiences. Commissioner Isaiah would like to see commissioners participate in already existing programs and clubs if given the opportunity. Chair Erynn asked about opportunities to show a movie and/or have speakers. Hutchinson stated he had spoken with Recreation Coordinator Gina and has been given approval to show a movie and have speakers at FWCC camp program. Hutchinson reminded commissioners to have age-appropriate topics/material. Fundraising Commissioner Mohammed contacted the chocolate company and reported that the price per box of chocolates decreases as boxes purchased increases. Hutchinson stated the commissioners should be sure to contact school administration and adhere to any rules and regulations in regards to selling/fundraising at school. Chair Erynn brought up running the general store at the RW&B festival. Hutchinson informed group that start-up funds for the store would need to come from fundraising efforts rather than the YC budget. A decision will need to be made by May as to whether the YC will participate in this fundraising opportunity. Chair Erynn feels a lock-in night may be a good way to raise money. Hutchinson stated the lock-in could be held at FWCC. Vice Chair Alyssa feels that small fundraising events like a bingo night would be a good way to start and be a success. Commissioner Anastassia stated she would like to see events like lazertag at these events. She also suggested having an auction/art show/dinner to raise funds. Hutchinson told the group to finalize their ideas and bring their proposals to the next meeting for approval and an action plan. NEW BUSINESS Meeting Frequency Commissioner Mohammed stated he would like to meet more often. There was a general consensus that too much time passes between discussions and action suffers as a result. Hutchinson will discuss with Schmidt. Subject will receive further discussion… Relay for Life Chair Erynn asked commissioner Anastassia to inform the group about this event. Event is held at Saghalie May 29 – 30. There is a possibility of having a booth to promote YC, also have a team of commissioners participating in the event itself.
