Over the last 3 years I have been acting and directing small productions around the Burien,Freemont and Auburn area.I attained two lead roles,4 supporting and directed one production all under Highline Community College.I went on to work for several different groups. This summer I was charged with running a small group of actors.During our 3 month venture I turned a small gathering of friends&actors into a profitable entertainment group. After being undermined by the theater we worked with we decided to go our separate ways. So after much thought and consideration I have decided to lend my talents out to the public. By becoming a member of the Arts committee I can bring much needed service to this art starved community. I have taught in the school district for over 20 years before retiring. We moved to Federal Way 12 years ago I am impressed by many things here, the foresight to purchase land for the park system, the sidewalks and new crossings,The Federal Way Community Center, the Senior Centers, the Transit Center, the Dumas Bay Property, and the cultural events. It is wonderful that we can drive a short distance to hear our Symphony, the Chorale Singers, the Barbershop singers and Sweet Adeline's, and Center Stage performances plus other events throughout the year. It is a joy to see the sculptures and art work in various places around our city. It is time that I paid back the city for these advantages with whatever time and talent that could be of use to you. I am acquainted with several talented artists in this area and feel blessed that we can encourage and display their works. It enhances awareness of our emotional and spiritual side of life by giving us new perspectives. Federal Way has been doing a fine job of bringing art to the city. I believe we can continue to explore and broaden our venues of art to the public. Our new downtown development will be a wonderful place to expand public art visually and musically I am hoping we continue with public art and have a downtown gallery that supports our local artists with their various mediums. Federal Way Arts Commission Application Addendum — December 4, 2014 I thought it important to supplement my submission for the vacancy on the Arts Commission expanding on my practical experiences dealing with art in a community and our fantastic planet. In my travels to Europe, it is quite apparent that art in many forms performs the function of defining a city, like Paris for example. On virtually every street you will see statues dating back hundreds years. On building scattered throughout the city, you will see frescos painted on the sides of historic buildings. You wander inside those same buildings and you're immediately mesmerized by the renderings and paintings of great artists over decades and centuries. Museums of immeasurable and historical significance are easily attainable by mass transit. When traveling to Scotland, the city of Edinburgh was littered with artistic artifacts and statuary of men and women who played roles in the history of that fabled country. Museums of fine art are studded throughout the city. When Karla and I traveled to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, I was impressed of the early artistry of the Mayans as well as the other native people of the region, including the Aztecs and Incas in other parts of Mexico. Their pyramids rising up to meet the sun withholding their secrets of a society long ago but keenly on display is their art that was left behind. When we've had the opportunity to take advantage of cruises to other parts of the world, Alaska, the Caribbean, the Pacific Coast of Mexico, through the Panama Canal, you can be sure that when visiting those interesting cities that the first thing that grabs your attention are the local artists plying their trades near the ports. As President I Commanding General of the Association of Washington Generals, a legislatively-approved non-profit, I have had the great opportunity to participate in the building of a memorial honoring the crew of the St. Nikolai, complete with engraved plaques describing the incredible adventure that they encountered and the trials of their courage and perseverance. The dedication of this project will take place next summer 2015. What my recent participation in building the memorial and our travels around the different continents has made me realize is that art in all its forms is what is left behind for generations to admire and gain some sense of what life was like when those fabulous creations were crafted. It also signifies the pride of a community when placing artwork for everyone to enjoy in public spaces. It defines us. Thank you and I look forward to serving the city of Federal Way on the Arts Commissi. . Federal Way,WA 98023 Please review cover letter & application. 253 874 2303 -- dphershman @gmail.com To whom it may concern; This is a letter of application for the Federal Way Arts Commission. My interest in joining the commission stems from my years of residency here, my teaching career in the arts and my work in both musical and visual arts. I'm in the process of planning a retirement from teaching and am looking for ways to continue serving the community through the arts. of Federal Way since 1968. I attended schools here and graduated from Thomas I've been a resident o Fede a s ce 8 Y Jefferson High School in 1973. (I was thrilled and fortunate to have Roland Schanzenbach and Don Barrows as my teachers.) I was fortunate in receiving a teaching position here in my hometown in the fall of 1979; my wife Jane and I have lived here since. During the 1980s I taught did graduate work at the University of Washington, eventually earning a PhD in music in 1994. I was a performer with the Federal Way Symphony for many years and also was a member of its board of directors from 1995-2010. One of my major projects on that board was the yearly organization of the Marjorie Easley Young Artists Competition. I have also pursued an interest in visual arts through my photographic work. I have taught photography at Todd Beamer High School since its opening in 2003. I have twice been a featured artist for the city's arts competitions. My photographic work has been primarily in nature, my images are featured in a number of books, magazines and the web throughout the world. One of the challenges the city faces is embracing its diversity. I believe that our community has an untapped cultural richness that has been an outgrowth of our changing demographics, it is vital that we use the arts as a means for promoting our community, both within and to the area at large. My experience with young people in our schools these past decades has made me aware of the rich cultural diversity that makes up our city. If chosen to serve, I would work towards incorporating those groups into our city's culture. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Daniel P.
