Board and Commission Application Page 2 of 3 Last Updated September 17,2014 City of ft_ d eraf iPr' a 'y mayor ' s office I1 Brian Wollaston (www.wollastonbc(a,yahoo.com): Attention: Brian Wilson chief of staff(mayor's office): My name is Brian Wollaston and has lived in the community of Federal Way for almost twenty years, and over the years of living in this region I have seen some great improvement for the overall community, and not so great. From the widening of the 320th intersection where the turn lanes coming from east side were shortened up to allow for the widening project, the use of camera's at specific intersections, to the building of the new town square park, while never forgetting the vote to install a voted upon mayor as opposed to having the city council appointing one. The city like its residence have gone through many changes over the years, with Mayor Skip Priest who had the thankless job of setting the wheels into motion by implementing the machinery that's in place now for our current mayor Jim Farrell to carry out his vision along with council help of making Federal Way a destination city as opposed to passing through on our way to Tacoma. Mr. Wilson my interest into the politics of the city is from a pure perspective. The process of the city council is based upon results and not party affiliation, which is the example those in both Olympia, and Washington DC could take a lesson from. So my interest is to be involved in the process as more than just a voter, and become a part of the solutions, and be able to one day soon be on the city council, and start my journey along the way to improving the city, but allowing the voices of the quiet majority to be heard. Mr. Wilson my experience is very little, but my passion to learn, create, and become part of something bigger is strong within myself as well. Being part of a community is more than just paying your taxes, voting, and attending rallies. Involvement begins with starting at the bottom and learning from those who the experience, wisdom, and knowledge with which to implement their ideas, nobody ever became talented at anything without learning the ropes from the basement to the penthouse in life or any other profession during life. What I'm asking is to somehow become a part of the process, and stop being on the sidelines only watching the game, but be allowed to suit up and play the game as well. Being part of the solution beats the hell out of always being part of the problem. Apathy is the biggest problem facing the cities, states, and federal government individuals believing that there votes are meaningless, and no matter what they do it doesn't matter anyway, but City of federal way mayor ' s office 12 Mr. Wilson I strongly believe that one man or one good idea can change the future, 2,000 years a man and twelve fisherman changed the world, and still today his belief system or faith is still the focal point of both good and bad in our world. So yes being involved within the process from the bottom up is the beginning point of the future for me to see the inner working of how city government works and accomplishes the tasks from police department, to the inner working of the city council. I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon Mr. Wilson, and I'm looking forward to being a part of the city government process, and learning the ins and outs of how things become accomplished. So thank you for your time and efforts to look into me becoming a part of the city government process. Apathy is the biggest problem facing the cities, states, and federal government individuals believing that there votes are meaningless, and no matter what they do it doesn't matter anyway, but City of federal way mayor s office 12 Mr. My interest in joining the commission stems from my years of residency here, my teaching career in the arts and my work in both musical and visual arts. I'm in the process of planning a retirement from teaching and am looking for ways to continue serving the community through the arts. I've been a resident of Federal Way since 1968. I attended schools here and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1973. (I was thrilled and fortunate to have Roland Schanzenbach and Don Barrows as my teachers.) I was fortunate in receiving a teaching position here in my hometown in the fall of 1979; my wife Jane and I have lived here since. During the 1980s I taught did graduate work at the University of Washington, eventually earning a PhD in music in 1994. I was a performer with the Federal Way Symphony for many years and also was a member of its board of directors from 1995-2010. One of my major projects on that board was the yearly organization of the Marjorie Easley Young Artists Competition. I have also pursued an interest in visual arts through my photographic work. I have taught photography at Todd Beamer High School since its opening in 2003. I have twice been a featured artist for the city's arts competitions. My photographic work has been primarily in nature, my images are featured in a number of books, magazines and the web throughout the world. One of the challenges the city faces is embracing its diversity. I believe that our community has an untapped cultural richness that has been an outgrowth of our changing demographics, it is vital that we use the arts as a means for promoting our community, both within and to the area at large. My experience with young people in our schools these past decades has made me aware of the rich cultural diversity that makes up our city. If chosen to serve, I would work towards incorporating those groups into our city's culture. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, P°11 Daniel P.
