Applicant Signature: SUBMIT COMPLETE APPLICATIONS TO: City of Federal Way City Clerk's Office • 33325 8th Avenue South Federal Way,WA 98003 Board and Commission Application Page 1 of 3 Last Updated August 2014 Why do you want to serve on this Board/Commission? I graduated from the Advancing Leadership program in Federal Way in 2009. Since that time I have looked for ways I can volunteer to help our local community. I joined the Federal Way CDBG LRAC in 2012,and have enjoyed serving on this committee for the last two years. We have made excellent progress in creating a process to evaluate, assist, and develop recommendations on potentially funding new and existing businesses in Federal Way. We have identified several areas where we can improve our process however, and I'd like to serve an additional term on the committee to help implement these improvements and streamline our process further. What are your prior experiences in this area? Most of my experience in this area comes from serving on this board for the last two years. My Bachelor's and Master's degrees are each in electrical engineering, which I think serves me well in analyzing data and problem solving. It is important for the CDBG LRAC to fully comprehend the details of the applications we receive and to ask the right questions to better understand how the applicants plan to accomplish their business development goals. Serving on this committee has strengthened my skills in seeing the strengths and weaknesses of the business plans that are presented to us. I'd like to continue to improve in this area and help the CDBG LRAC at the same time. How do you see your role as a Board Member/Commissioner? I believe my role on the CDBG LRAC is to help the committee reach its goals in several ways: • Provide thoughtful, constructive, detailed analysis on the funding applications we receive. Instead of focusing on why these applications may not meet our criteria, look for ways to help the applicants meet that criteria. • Examine the processes that we use to screen applicants, and find ways to improve our efficiency so we are able to look at more candidates in a shorter time frame. • Collaborate with the other members of the CDBG LRAC as much as possible. The team has worked very well together up to this point, recognizing that each member has specific strengths and can contribute in different ways. I expect our excellent teamwork to continue. • Deliver sound recommendations to the City Council on applications that we believe offer excellent economic development opportunities for the city. Describe anything in your past or recent activities perceived as an embarrassment: I do not know of anything in my work, home,or volunteer activities that I would consider an 'embarrassment'. I like to believe that even though I sometimes make mistakes,my good faith effort and intentions most often result in positive experiences both for myself and those around me. , CITY OF Federal Way Human Services Commission UPDATED:August 18,2014 Position 1 Position 2 Position 3 Ronald Secreto,Chair Brian Sandler Bob Wroblewski 30017 24th Avenue SW 633 SW 299th Street 31826 48th Circle SW Federal Way,WA 98023 Federal Way,98023 Federal Way,WA 98023 Home: 253-661-1499 Home:253-946-1033 Home: 253-874-5205 Fax: 253-661-0343 Cell: 206-819-2768 rwroblewski@comcast.net rjsecreto@comcast.net Ibsandler@comcast.net Appointed 1-17-2012 Appointed 2-2-2010 Appointed: 10-2-2012 Term 1-31-2015 Re-Appointed 2-5-2013 Term 1-31-2015 Term 1-31-2016 Position 4 Position 5 Position 6 Mary S chultz Jack Stanford 420 S.302"d Street 33244 2nd Place SW Sinh Nguyen Federal Way,WA 98003 Federal Way,WA 98023 111 SW 301St Street Home: 253-529-0843 Home: 253-835-9746 Federal Way,WA 98023 Cell: 253-334-8664 Cell:206-799-1325 Phone: 206-227-8844 maryschultz@myway.com jack@stanfordinsurance.com Phone: 253-946-4893 Appointed: 1-17-2012 Appointed:4-2-2013 snguyen @evergreenCPG.org Re-Appointed 2-5-2013 Term 1-31-2016 Appointed: 6-3-2014 Term 1-31-2016 Term 1-31-2016 Position 7 Position 8 Position 9 Vacant Kathryn Scanlon,Vice Chair Jan Owen 28816 23rd Place South 4220 SW 314th Place Federal Way, 98003 Federal Way,98023 Phone: 253-334-0836 Home: 253-661-5354 kskillingstead@yahoo.com janowenian@gmail.com Re-appointed 1-21-2014 Re-appointed 1-21-2014 Term 1-31-2016 Term 1-31-2017 Term 1-31-2017 MEETINGS: 3rd Monday of each month MEMBERS: 9 Voting TERM: 3-years STAFF CONTACT: Jeff Watson, Community Services Manager Phone: 253-835-2650—Email: Jeff.watson @cityoffederalway.com Dee Dee Catalano, CDBG/Human Services Coordinator Phone: 253-835-2651 - Email: denisec@cityoffederalway.com City of Federal Way AUG 2 7 2014 33325 Eighth Avenue South c Federal Way,WA 98003 cr<rF tty filer 's Office Way PHONE: 253-835-254-0. I believe community involvement is the core pillar to all successful cities. In saying this as a member of the Federal Way community, I would be honored to serve my fellow citizens as a member of the Human Services Commission. As a city, if we invest in our human capital with time, treasure and resources we are well suited to become a stronger community and protect ourselves from crime, poverty and overall injustice. If selected to serve on the board, I will offer fair and non-biased recommendations and always be as transparent as possible when providing data to support all recommendations. What are your prior experiences in this area? My experience in Human Services and building community has been to invest in youth through"Young life"—a non denominational Christian organization. I have previously been a YoungLife leader and maintained connection with the organization through fundraising and mentorship opportunities. Outside of volunteering, being a member of the military has given me the breadth of understanding many cultures and how important human services can be to a community and nation. How do you see your role as a Board Member/Commissioner? My role as a Board Member/Commissioner on the Human Services Commission will be to provide non- biased recommendations based on clear information and quantifiable results. Describe anything in your past or recent activities perceived as an embarrassment: I do not have anything in my past or any recent activities that would be perceived as an embarrassment. I enjoy land use planning and helping the City shape its future. The City has excellent professional planning staff and seeing the solutions to the City's problems that they develop. I have borrowed some of the concepts that Janet Shull and Matt Herrera have presented in the consulting that I do for other cities and counties throughout Washington and California. What are your prior experiences in this area? I am an AICP planner and principal of a planning, landscape architecture, and engineering firm with offices in Seattle and Tacoma among others. I have current appointments teaching green stormwater infrastructure courses at the University of Washington and The Ohio State University. In the last six years,I have completed or am near compelting six GMA comprehensive plans and 14 shoreline master program updates I have assisted 75 cities and counties in Washington and California integrate low impact development practices into local codes. How do you see your role as a Board Member/Commissioner? Advise staff and ultimately the City Council on potential amendments to City plans and codes. Most of the City's planning staff do not live in the City,so it my job to make sure that the great work and ideas that the planning staff comes up do not have fatal flaws that will affect those of us that live here. I also tend to bounce ideas off of my neighbors in the Park Trails subdivision to ask what they think about concepts that staff is proferring. I have been generally unsuccessful, however,in getting my neighbors to come to the meetings and hearings. Describe anything in your past or recent activities perceived as an embarrassment: I sometimes have a false confidence with my memory of names. I recently called a very client that I have known for years by the wrong name. Many years ago before I was married, I forgot the name of my date to the company Christmas party. It is funny now, but the embarassment was particularly bad that night and resulted in years of friendly teasing by colleagues that I still work with to this day.
