The meeting was called to order at 3:11PM.

3. COMMITTEE COMMENT
Ms. Herringshaw reviewed her handout that listed stions from the community on Facebook that she is a
part of and gave a brief overview. One of the common suggestions Was to have dogs do searches and if the
dog detected drugs or gi,Msymayhe this will help prevent and deter. Puyallup is currently using dogs for this
purpose.
Lauritzen summarized alt all of the responses to the community violence prevention meetings. There were
a lot of suggesti provided the c�mmun ty.The following are the most reoccurring suggestions:

• Partner with Federal School District
• Social/Media and communications
• What sees are available in City of Federal Way
• Hire more • e officers

Approval of Minutes
Motion to approve August 28, 2016 meeting minutes by Kira Kuetgens and seconded by Erin Herringshaw.
Motion passed unanimously.
B. Survey Subcommittee Update
Youth Survey
Mr. Aguilar updated the committee on the survey for the Youth and is going to see if he can distribute the
survey to all of the High Schools advisory classes to be completed. If that isn't an option Ms.Cruz and he will
go during the lunch periods to speak to the students.

The committee reviewed and discussed the survey questions and made a few minor changes,the following
are the final questions. Some of the questions will have rated answers(i.e.from 0-5).
Primary Prevention
• Do you feel safe in your community in general?
• Where are the areas that you feel unsafe?
• What types of activities are needed to engage the community's young people?
• What do you think can decrease crime in your area?
• What can be done to create safety in your neighborhood or apartment complex?
Secondary Prevention
• I believe that teachers are trained/equipped to address At,Risk Youth Issues.
• What, specifically,would make teachers more effective at working with At Risk Youth issues?
• I believe that existing community spaces should be used to create after school programs and
activities.
• What agencies are making positive changes in gang/drug prevention?
• What solutions have you seen work best to address At Risk Youth in Federal Way?
Tertiary Prevention
• There are enough resources for youth and young adults who have exhibited behavior.
• If not,what resources do you think are lacking in Federal Way?
• What would you,as a community member,do to help youth and young adults reach their full
potential?
• How do you recommend we keep firearms out of the hands of youth and young adults in Federal
Way?
D. Community Outreach
Ms. Clark to have the survey to the committee on October 1, 2016 and survey trial run due back on October
5th. The committee will send out the survey to 3 people to give feedback to see if we need to change the
survey. Once the committee feels the survey is finalized,they will each send it out to their"people groups".
The VPCSC will hold a community meeting on October 26, 2016, at 6PM at City Council Chambers to reach
out to the community to hear what they have to say.
