Box 65198 University Place, WA 98464 Attention: Mr. Steve Mackey Subject: Soil Searing Verification Proposed Gupta Residence, File #06 -103491 -00 -UP 193xx 3rd Ave SW, Federal Way, Washington During a site inspection on September 6, 2007 where your excavator had excavated several trenches along various footing lines it was our observation and opinion that bearing soils were not exposed within the trenches and the trenches must be further extended to bearing soils. Your excavator then began footing trench excavation in earnest and we revisited the site on September 10, 2007 to further evaluate subsurface conditions. It was apparent at that time that depth to bearing soils in some areas was very deep (up to 11 feet below existing grade), especially along the west side. We then consulted with you and determined that the appropriate course of action was to use CDF (controlled density fill) to fill the trenches up to planned footing elevation. The trenches would be completed and CDF placement planned for Wednesday, September 12, 2007. On September 12, 2007, prior to CDF placement, we performed a final inspection to verify suitable bearing soils in all trenches. The foundation trenches had been excavated through the old fill and topsoil into medium dense to dense, damp, brown, silty Fine to medium sand with trace gravel native sediments. The trenches were typically about 4 feet wide although the center trench was a total of 8 to 10 feet wide. The depth of the trenches to the bearing subgrade sediments varied from about 4 to 11 feet. All of the trench sides were cut near vertical with minimal sloughing or caving observed. CDF was ordered to begin filling the trenches later in the day. The placed CDF will extend the foundation loads to native, medium dense to dense bearing sediments capable of providing suitable support for the planned single Tamil r nwWanv.
