At your request, Associated Earth Sciences, Inc. (AESI) has performed footing subgrade
inspection in the steep slope area at the above -referenced address. Our scope of work included
review of our files regarding grading of the site, visiting the site, and assessing the exposed
soil conditions with regard to foundation bearing support.
Verbal authorization to proceed with this study was granted by Mr. Alex Krevchenko. This
letter has been prepared for the exclusive use of the Mr. Krevchenko and his agents for
specific application to this project. Within the limitations of scope, schedule, and budget, our
services have been performed in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering
and engineering geology practices in effect in this area at the time our report was prepared.
No other warranty, express or implied, is made.
SITE OBSERVATIONS AND UNDERSTANDING
An Associated Earth Sciences, Inc. (AESI) geotechnical engineer visited the site on
September 1, 2006 to document site conditions. We observed that the westernmost footing line
for the dwelling extended onto the 2H: 1V (Horizontal: Vertical) slope at the west side of the lot
(see attached foundation plan). The excavation for the foundations, footing forms, and the
reinforcement steel had been constructed prior to our arrival. The excavation was benched
into the slope approximately 5 to 6 feet below the level of the main floor subgrade elevation.
Based on our file review, the lot appears to have been cut from original grade. The exposed
soils consisted of damp, tan, fine to medium, some coarse, SAND, few gravel. We interpreted
these sediments to be native, Vashon advance outwash sands. We probed the footing
subgrades with a 1/2 -inch -diameter, steel probe and found the sediments to be medium dense

to very dense and suitable for support of the 1,500 pounds per square foot (psf) design loads
(per structural plan notes by NN Engineering), in our opinion.
According to Mr. Krevchenko, the foundation stemwalls will be extended down to the lowered
foundations and backfilled against the cut on the inside. Backfill on the outside of the
foundations will consist of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall backfill, which AESI has
been retained to design to provide a more level backyard.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
In our opinion, the footings are founded on suitable, native sediments and will be backfilled by
the MSE wall backfill to provide a suitable, effective setback from the face of the slope.
We recommend that the contractor exercise caution if excavation for the MSE wall and geogrid
reinforcement will be performed after the footings have been constructed. Future excavation
should not encroach within 3 feet of the edge of constructed footings and should not extend
below a 11-1: IV line downward from the bottom of the footings. The contractor should be
responsible for a safe, stable, temporary cut slope for wall construction, and WISHA/OSHA
guidelines should be followed at all times.
