3. COMMITTEE COMMENT
Ms. Herringshaw reviewed her handout that listed questions from the community on Facebook that she is a
part of and gave a brief overview. One of the common suggestions was to have dogs do searches and if the
dog detected drugs or guns, maybe this will help prevent and deter. Puyallup is currently using dogs for this
purpose.
Ms. Lauritzen summarized all of the responses to the community violence prevention meetings. There were
a lot of suggestions provided by the community. The following are the most reoccurring suggestions:
• Open gyms/sports/activities
• Mentoring
• Partner with Federal Way School District
• Social media and communications
• What services are available in City of Federal Way
• Hire more police officers
4. COMMITTEE BUSINESS
A. Approval of Minutes
Motion to approve August 28, 2016 meeting minutes by Kira Kuetgens and seconded by Erin Herringshaw.
Motion passed unanimously.
B. Survey Subcommittee Update
Youth Survey
Mr. Aguilar updated the committee on the survey for the Youth and is going to see if he can distribute the
survey to all of the High Schools advisory classes to be completed. If that isn't an option Ms. Cruz and he will
go during the lunch periods to speak to the students.
The committee reviewed and discussed the survey questions and made a few minor changes, the following
are the final questions. Some of the questions will have rated answers (i.e. from 0-5).
Primary Prevention
• Do you feel safe in your community in general?
• Where are the areas that you feel unsafe?
• What types of activities are needed to engage the community's young people?
• What do you think can decrease crime in your area?
• What can be done to create safety in your neighborhood or apartment complex?
Secondary Prevention
• 1 believe that teachers are trained/equipped to address At Risk Youth Issues.
• What, specifically, would make teachers more effective at working with At Risk Youth issues?
• 1 believe that existing community spaces should be used to create after school programs and
activities.
• What agencies are making positive changes in gang/drug prevention?
• What solutions have you seen work best to address At Risk Youth in Federal Way?
Tertiary Prevention
• There are enough resources for youth and young adults who have exhibited dangerous behavior.
• If not, what resources do you think are lacking in Federal Way?
• What would you, as a community member, do to help youth and young adults reach their full
potential?
• How do you recommend we keep firearms out of the hands of youth and young adults in Federal
Way?
