3. COMMITTEE COMMENT
Chair Baxter will be meeting with Ms. Estes, Grant Director at Tacoma Goodwill, on Monday, November 14,
2017. He will be speaking with Ms. Estes about how the Goodwill (Tacoma) location has been providing
Youth and Young Adult services programming for years now, and they are very interested in getting to
better know more about the key issues facing young people there in Federal Way.
They are very interested in what the city's stakeholders also suggest for what youth and young adults need
in Federal Way (in terms of education, employment, support services, etc.) They would like to provide those
types of services and do more for Federal Way.
VPCSC members are invited to attend the meeting, please let Chair Baxter know if you will be available to
attend. Chair Baxter will give an update on the meeting at the December 14, 2016 meeting.
4. COMMITTEE BUSINESS
A. Approval of Minutes
Motion to approve October 26, 2016 meeting minutes by Kira Kuetgens and seconded by Dianne Zoro.
Motion passed unanimously.
B. Community Meeting Recap
(See attached Summary to Community Violence Prevention Questions for complete recap)
Chair Baxter asked for the committee to provide the common comments that were discussed at the
Community Meeting. Some of the samples are: CFW needs to have more communication with the
community and there needs to be a greater social media presence (Facebook, Safe City, Next Door, Peach
Jar, etc.) updating the community; we need to address the economic disadvantages that affect our
community; Federal Way needs more locations for kids to go to after school; free or discount transportation
options for the youth to go to their jobs, schools, and after school activities. Everyone agreed we need more
jobs for teenagers, and possibly utilizing college kids by giving them college credit for helping out in after
school activities, mentorship, etc.
The committee had a lot of discussion regarding Teen Nights and about sharing the events with different
agencies (e.g., EX3 Teen Center, FW Community Center, and Churches). Each location would have a
different theme like basketball, crafts, movies, board games, cooking, etc. Leaders in the community would
come and help out and mentor to the students. The committee will come back with more suggestions at
the next meeting.
C. Survey Results Update, D. Compilation of Survey Results, E. Recommendation Structure
Due to a committee member needing to leave, we no longer had a quorum and were not able to discuss
items C through E.
