Bellevue, WA 98009 1 DATE RE: Proposed Rockeries at Lot 4 of the Quadrant East Campus Corporate Park, Federal Way, WA I have reviewed the civil plan for the project, Sheets C-1 through C-8, which were prepared by ESM Consulting Engineers and dated June 19, 2000. The plans indicate that some rockeries will be located on the southern side of the proposed Building D and the developed portion of the site. Most of the rockeries are approximately 4 feet tall or less, but one rockery that is up to 8 feet tall is proposed in a cut area near the �S'outhPastern edge of the development and another one that is up to approximately 5.5 feet is proposed in a fill area along the southwestern edge of the development. A "rock wall" design is shown on Sheet C -B_ In my professional opinion, this design is suitable for all rockeries that are less than 4 feet in height and/or in areas of cut. We do recommQnd, howaver, that the size of the base rock be dimensioned on the detail as one-third the height of the rockory. The rockery that is proposed on the southwestern side of the development, where taller than 4 feet, needs to have its backfill reinforced with geogrid material to be structurally stable. We have attached a dotail fora geogrid-reinforcAd rockery The plans indicate that a 4 -foot -tall rockery is proposed relatively close to the southwestern corner of the building. The construction of the rockery should not undermine any building footings, therefore we recommend that the excavation for the rockery not extend within a 45 -degree angle between the bottom of the excavation and the bottom of the footing. Therefore. if the difference in elevation is 5 feet, the excavation should be no closer than 5 feet to the footing.
