At the Request of Mr. Steve Ikerd,City of Federal Way representative, I completed a site visit to observe foundation subgrade for four new interior footings and to discuss foundation support issues for the new addition being constructed in the area of the former loading dock: Interior Footings I observed foundation conditions for the four new interior footings(NW,NE, SW,and SE). Native glacial till was exposed at the NW footing. A few inches of lose soil was present. I recommended removing the loose soil to expose undisturbed soil. Undisturbed, native glacial till was exposed at the SW footing. Native glacial till was exposed over most of the SE footing. About 6 inches of wet sand was present in the east portion of the excavation. I recommend overexcavation of the wet sand to expose the underlying glacial till. Water will likely collect in the excavation and should be pumped out prior to pouring of concrete. The NE footing was currently being excavated. The excavation had exposed native glacial till. In my opinion,the undisturbed,native glacial till is suitable to support foundation bearing loads in excess of 6,000 psf. Addition Area While at the site, I discussed foundation support issues with Steve Ikerd and Dave Clark(project architect),for the addition being constructed in the loading dock area. The area where the new footings are planned was observed to be underlain by loose soil and the existing footing drains. I recommended that the loose soil from within the zone of influence of the footing be removed. The zone of influence extends outward from the edge of the footing a horizontal distance equal to%the depth of the excavation. The excavation should be backfilled with a suitable granular material, such CSBC or pit run. The material should be placed in lifts of 8 to 10 inches and compacted to at least 95%of the maximum dry density(ASTM D1557). Alternatively, CDF could be used to backfill the overexcavation. The new footing drain could be tied into the existing drain line that runs N-S along the west side of the building. Since the connection will be beneath the new footing, it should be encased in concrete to protect it from crushing. I recommended that import fill,such as a clean pit run be used to establish floor subgrade elevation for the addition.
