This was field inspected and found acceptable. While the placement puts the vector of restraint diagonally through the framing members, the integral strength of the connection to the shear wall is maintained. In addition, some additional strength is added to the nail connection to the wall in that the nails do not pass through the layer of sheathing, and are thus (theoretically) a little stronger in that respect. Conventional installation of the hold downs is still recommended as a general practice. At four locations along the south side, the cast in hold downs were too short. It appears that the RJ (rim joist) series should have been used. The hold downs need to connect to the shear wall. The recommended solution is to use strap extentions with overlap to connect up to the height of the shear wall. The common through nailing should be the same as the number of nails used for the usual frame nailing. Feel free to contact this office should you have questions relating to the above. Bruce S.
