As the City prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2015, it is focusing on economi community development, public safety, and other critical needs for the fiscal health of cities acro Economic Development Support for critical downtown revitalization projects The City is seeking capital funding for its downtown Performing Arts and Conference Center and planning funds for efforts to site a college branch campus in its downtown. Communi ty Development Address South King County homeless and affordable housing needs The City seeks seed money for planning a regional South King County day shelter to serve the growing regional need for homeless services. The structure of state tax incentives is causing affordable multifamily housing to develop in an inequitable pattern in King County, leaving some communities with insufficient supply. The City recommends forming a legislative working group to develop solutions to King County's affordable housing barriers. Transportation Enact a comprehensive transportation revenue package and ballot authority for Sound Transit Investments in new transportation projects, and maintenance and preservation of the state's transportation infrastructure are critical to the economy. Completing the Triangle Interchange project is needed to serve South King County cities and Port of Tacoma freight movement. Voters should be given the opportunity to vote on a Sound Transit 3 package to bring regional light rail to Federal Way, Tacoma and surrounding communities. Public Safety Support local efforts to combat DUI and distracted driving Federal Way's Nick & Derek Project mobilizes specially trained traffic officers to target DUIs and distracted driving, reducing the biggest safety threat to residents and visitors using City streets. The City seeks additional state support to expand the program and demonstrate the effectiveness of the targeted enforcement approach at the local level.
