Mr. Mark Machin,with McBride Construction, directed our attention to Item#3 of said notice and requested/discussed a design to repair one floor joist with multiple holes through it for electrical and cable wiring. The joist also has a split along its bottom. We performed a site visit on the afternoon of March 27th to review the existing condition of the floor joist and obtain the necessary measurements to analyze the member. Our attention was directed to the floor joist in question that is situated;adjacent to the laundry room,above the stair to the garage and to the"project" north of the stair landing. The floor joist is a 2x10 spanning approximately 9'-8"that supports part of the second floor. Even without any holes,this joist is not in a highly-stressed condition. The joist spans less than 10' and has less than 1'of tributary area. However,we do recommend the following: • Install one Hem-Fir#2 2x6 alongside the existing 2x10 joist,for the full span of.the joist. Nail the 2x6 to the 2x10 with 10d nails at 4"on center. The uppermost hole may need to be slightly enlarged to accommodate the installation of the 2x6. • Carefully install#8(0.164"diameter)wood screws that are a minimum of 3"long into predrilled holes up into the bottom of the joist to connect the split section of the joist to the remaining section. We recommend that approximately 5 screws be installed along the length of the 28"split. Avoid hitting the wiring. This will allow the finishes to be properly attached to the bottom of the joist.
