RESUBMITTED AUG 0 4 2016 July 15, 2016 CITY OF FEDERAL WAY CDS Federal Way Building Department 33325 8th Avenue South Federal Way,WA 98003 Pi4 Attn: Joseph Szpek 1616 J. RE: Decatur High School Gymnasium Upgrades 2016 Dear Mr. Szpek: Please note the following response to the Building Department questions regarding the capacity of the existing roof system of the Gymnasium building to support the new divider curtains. The roof framing system consists of DLH (deep long span) open web steel joists spaced at 10'-0" on center. The original contract documents required that these joists be designed to support the Code required live load of 25 PSF plus 15 PSF deal load (Total Load=400#/ft.)and in addition to support a maximum load of 700#at each bottom chord panel point at joists also supporting mechanical units and • a bottom chord panel point load of 1050#'s at joists not supporting mechanical units. The new divider curtains weigh 12#/ft. plus 8#/ft. for curtain support resulting in a total of 20#/ft. Additionally, an additional load of 5#/ft. is added for a safety factor resulting in a final total load of 25#/ft. The existing joists bottom chord panel points are 12'-0"on center, which results in the final analysis as follows: • At the new curtain located at Grid NN directly under an existing joist supporting a mechanical unit the resulting load to the bottom chord panel points is 300#--this is less than the 700# noted. • At the new curtain located between Grids LL and LL.5 (no mechanical unit)the resulting load to the bottom chord panel point is 150#(curtain load is supported by two joists)which is less than the 1050# noted. Therefore, based on the above review, the existing steel roof joists should safely support the new divider curtains. If you have any questions or required additional information, please don't hesitate to call. r I Sincerely,yatale7 4 //// ., f Ronald E.
