A, _ CITY OF Federal Way WASTE MANAGEMENT Recycle Palooza Presentation November 3, 2015 Council Meeting Talking Points for Mayor Ferrell: o The City of Federal Way and Waste Management have partnered each year since 2011 to offer the Recycle Palooza Contest, a city -wide recognition program which encourages and rewards Federal Way residents for Recycling Right. o To date Waste Management has provided $24,000 in reward - prizes promoting City of Federal Way Recycling programs o This year's event was held May 30 at the Federal Way Community Center o 50 residents were randomly selected from the "yes, I want to participate" sign -up list to have their recycling cart materials sorted and judged based on acceptable and non - acceptable items found in their carts o Cart sorts were conducted the day of the event with residents observing as cart sorts took place and learning through one -on -one feedback what why certain materials were or were not acceptable o Resident recycle carts judged to have clean acceptable recycling materials were entered in the drawing for reward - prizes ranging from $20 gift cards at The Commons Mall to $100 Garbage account credits and the Grand Prize $1,000 dollars o This year a $1,000 match to the grand prize winner's school of choice was added o Federal Way Resident Kit Lan Ho was this year's $1,000 Grand Prize winner. She was unable to be with us this evening but happy to announce her school choice $1,000 winner is The South Puget Sound Chinese Language School o The South Puget Sound Chinese Language School is supported by the South Puget Sound Chinese - American Club and is a non - profit operating at Highline Community College. Their teachers are all volunteers without pay. Receiving the $1,000 will allow the school to postpone a tuition increase as well as provide tuition discount for their low income families o Here this evening to accept the $1,000 check is: o Alice Flores, President of South Puget Sound Chinese - American Club o Sui Fang, Vice Principal of South Puget Sound Chinese Language School o David Chau, Past Principal for the South Puget Sound Chinese Language School
