WA 98003 To the building inspector, We are the structural engineers of record for this project, and performed the structural design for permit submittal. This letter is in response to a request by the building department reviewer and the contractor,to evaluate several 16"diameter duct penetrations of the shear wall. There are 7 penetrations total, as shown on the attached wall elevation provided by the contractor. Three penetrations are located away from the two hallway openings. Those do not significantly affect the adequacy of the shear wall at those locations. Solid blocking shall be provided in the wall framing around those ducts, and nailed all around the duct penetrations, in accord with SW-1 (previously submitted for the original permit submittal). No further strengthening is required. A pair of penetrations is located over each of the two hallway openings. At these locations, the attached calculation page (DP-1) indicates that the existing 4x14 purlin is adequate to resist the forces applied to it by the shear wall.
