An ASI engineer visited the project site to evaluate foundation and rockery wall conditions related to a proposed deck addition at the subject residence, Upon arrival, we met with Save Harrelson (client and homeowner) to discuss the project status. Our discussions and observations are summarized below. 1, Mr. Harrelson indicated that demolition of the old deck has been completed. We observed several concrete piers that had been used to support the old deck posts. Some piers were tilted outward slightly, apparently as a result of lateral loads. 2. According to construction plans prepared by USI, the new deck will consist of upper and lower levels measuring 10 feet by 20 feet arra having a similar footprint to that of the old deck. Support pasts for the new deck will be placed at the outer corners and at the midpoint of the outer edge. I Existing site grades descend to the east in a terraced configuration. From the rear wall of the house, surface grades slope downward at an angle that approaches 4H:1V (horizontal:vertical), then step dawn 3 feet at an upper rockery wall, thea slope downward at a slight angle, then step down another 3 feet at a lower rockery, there slope down at a slight angle to the fend lime. 4. The upper rockery face is located about 15 feet away from the rear wall of the house, and the lower rockery is located about 10 feet away from the upper rockery. S. The new deck supports will be situated about 4 feet behind the ream of the upper rockery: At these support locations, ground surface grades lie about 6 inches above the top of the upper rockery. 6. We assessed soil conditions at the upper and middle terrace rising a 16--rich-diameter T-probe. Our probin s revealed loose surficlal soils (inferred to be fill material) extending down to depths ranging from about 24 to 30 inches, All soils appear to consist of silty sands with gravel, probably derived from ori-site cuts. The proximity of the existing rockery walls to the proposed deck supports, combined with the presence of loose fill soils mantling the deck support area, warrants special provisions for deck support foundations. If the new foundations are not adequately deep, then the foundations could impose undesirable lateral loads behind the upper rockery wall. 2, To avoid lateral surcharge loads on the upper rockery wall, we recommend that all deck support foundations extend to a depth of at least 42 inches below existing ground surface.'' 3. To provide adequate vertical and lateral bearing resistance, we recommend that all foundation piers (or ether foundation elements) have a diameter or width of at least 12 inches. 43 To reduce lateral soil load acting on the new deck support foundations, we recommend that the adjacent ground surface be re-graded to a nearly level configuration. It appears that excavation sails generated by this re-grading ;operation can be placed close to the house in the former hot tub pit. S.
