SUBJECT: The Courier Residence, 32211 25th Ave. 5W, Federal Way, WA 98023

At the request of the Courier's, we visited the site to observe the "unsupported"
beam in the basement. The laminated (3) 2x_ beam is located in the basement
(main floor framing) parallel to the stair and spans from the hall bearing wall
approximately 10 feet longitudinally into the room. The beam in question is located
directly below the main floor hall wall, posts and headers that support some roof
and ceiling structure. 240 floor joists extend from the exterior bearing wall
under the beam in question to the stair well bearing wall.
Close inspection of the framing at the free end of the "unsupported" beam reveals
a (4) 2x10 laminated beam framed flush in the floor space directly above the free
end of the beam in question. (2) 5/8" diameter all thread bolts with square plate
washers attach the beam free end to the flush beam in the floor. The beam in
question is admittedly ugly and not very well done, however, the beam is supported
at the free end and the structural concept is sound. Loading by the ceiling framing
through the hall headers and posts above is light. It is our professional opinion
that the beam in question is legitimately supported and the concept is structurally
sound.
