Thermal insulation in the vaulted ceilings. We consider R-30 insulation to be sufficient. We recommend installing batt insulation with an R value of 3.8 per inch of thickness, with a total thickness of 8 inches, leaving a 1" air gap for ventilation on top. We further recommend installing rigid insulation R-5 per inch above the lights. With 6 lights and an average of 0.5 sgft per light, this provides an overall R value of 30.1 above the addition. 2. The notched rafters at the southern wall of the bonus room are still adequate for the shear forces under the maximum load.
