The code requires that the ratio of the cantilever be 2:1 ratio unless the cantilever is supporting a roof and wall load
then is must be a 3:1 ratio. If the cantilever section extends 2 feet out then the back span must be 4 feet. If the
cantilever is 3 feet them it must back span 6 feet for this application. A rim joist is required at the end of the cantilever
section and blocking is required over the bearing wall of the cantilever. Minimum nailing is required to resist uplift force.
( See 2012 IRC table R 502.3.3(2.) That really requires an engineer but for this application the best nailing patterns is
one I have seen for other laminated members using 16d's at 8" o/c staggered with 2 nails within 6" of the ends. SDS
screws ( SDW22438 which is 4-3/8" in length ) can be substituted for nails spaced at 16" o/c staggered and 2 SDS
screws at 6" from the ends and no closer than 1-7/16 from the end of the member. I got this stitching pattern from
Simpson Fasten Muilt-ply members technical bulletin.
