Our records indicate that on Wednesday, February 6, 2013, permit 13 -100263 -00 -SF was issued by the
City of Federal Way. The International Residential Code, Section R105.5 states that every permit issued
shall become invalid unless the work authorized by such permit is commenced within 180 days after its
issuance, or if the work authorized by such permit is suspended or abandoned for a period of 180 days
after the time the work is commenced. The Building Official is authorized to grant, in writing, one or
more extensions of time, for periods not more than 180 days each. The extension shall be requested in
writing and justifiable cause demonstrated.
To request an extension of your permit, submit a written request to the Building Official within 20
working days of the date of this notice. The request should include information indicating that
circumstances beyond your control have prevented you from taking action on this permit. You may
request an extension by writing to permitcenteracityoffederalway com.
If you choose not to request an extension for this permit, your permit will become null and void 20
working days from the date of this notice. Work shall not continue at any time after expiration of the
permit unless you first obtain a new permit.
** Please note that this permit was issued to comply with Violation Order #12 -105618 -00 -VO. The city's
Code Enforcement Division will be notified if the permit expires for their follow up of the violation.**

NOTES:
1. These regulations apply to stairways for one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses subject
to the 2009 International Residential Code (IRC). Refer to the 2009 International Building Code
for requirements for stairs in other conditions.
2. For exceptions related to the construction of circular, spiral, or winding stairways, see R311.7.9.
3. The largest rise or run within any flight of stairs is not to exceed the smallest by more than 3/8".
4. A landing extending the width of the stair and measuring a minimum of 36" in the direction of
travel is required at the top and bottom of every stairway.
5. A floor landing is not required at the top of an interior flight of stairs, provided a door does not
swing over the stairs.
6. Handrails are required for stairways with four or more risers. See Tip Sheet 2 for additional
information regarding handrails.
7. Interior and exterior stairs must be illuminated with an artificial light source at each landing or
over each stairway section per R303.6. Light activation must be accessible at the top and
bottom of each landing without traversing any steps. Exterior stairways must be controlled from
inside the dwelling unit unless continuously illuminated or automatically controlled.

• Obtain a building permit before starting construction.
• The intent of this sheet is to address the basics of private residential stair construction only and does not address
the subject in great detail. Additional information can be found at your local building department, home
improvement store, or library.

R502.2.2 Decks.
Where supported by attachment to an exterior wall, decks shall be positively anchored to
the primary structure and designed for both vertical and lateral loads as applicable. Such
attachment shall not be accomplished by the use of toenails or nails subject to
withdrawal. Where positive connection to the primary building structure cannot be
verified during inspection, decks shall be self-supporting. For decks with cantilevered
framing members, connections to exterior walls or other framing members, shall be
designed and constructed to resist uplift resulting from the full live load specified in
Table R301.5 acting on the cantilevered portion of the deck.
R502.2.2.1 Deck ledger connection to band joist.
For decks supporting a total design load of 50 pounds per square foot (2394 Pa) [40
pounds per square foot (1915 Pa) live load plus 10 pounds per square foot (479 Pa) dead
load], the connection between a deck ledger of pressure -preservative -treated Southern
Pine, incised pressure -preservative -treated Hem -Fir or approved decay -resistant species,
and a 2 -inch (51 mm) nominal lumber band joist bearing on a sill plate or wall plate shall
be constructed with 1/2 -inch (12.7 m) lag screws or bolts with washers in accordance
with Table R502.2.2.1. Lag screws, bolts and washers shall be hot -dipped galvanized or
stainless steel.
R502.2.2.1.1 Placement of lag screws or bolts in deck ledgers.
The lag screws or bolts shall be placed 2 inches (51 mm) in from the bottom or top of the
deck ledgers and between 2 and 5 inches (51 and 127 mm) in from the ends. The lag
screws or bolts shall be staggered from the top to the bottom along the horizontal run of
the deck ledger.
