(AESI) is pleased to submit this summary of work performed for the observation of micropile installation and testing for the Federal Way School District Elementary 24 in Federal Way, Washington. The micropiles design and layout are shown on the City of Federal Way approved plans prepared by PCS Structural Solutions. MICROPILE INSTALLATION OBSERVATION While onsite, AESI observed the installation of sixteen micropile anchors.AESI was onsite a total of 9 days observing micropile installation. The drilling contractor (Condon-Johnson) utilized a track-mounted air-rotary drill. The holes for the micropiles were drilled with a 75/8-inch- diameter casing. AESI monitored the drill cuttings and compared them to previous soil studies. All micropile drill cuttings were observed to be dense Vashon lodgement till which is consistent with the geologic mapping and the 1999 geotechnical design report for the existing building. All micropiles were drilled to a depth of approximately 45 feet below slab elevation with the exception of micropile MP2-8. During the drilling of MP2-8 the drill bit broke off into the boring hole at a depth of approximately 34.5 feet. The drilling contractor opted to install a shorter pile in this location. The design team was notified and accepted this change so long as the testing requirements were still met. After installation MP2-8 had a bonded zone of 25 feet and the un- bonded zone stayed the same at 10 feet. Once the correct depth had been achieved for the micropiles, the contractor removed the inner drill assembly, leaving the casing intact. The contractor then installed the micropiles, which consisted of #18 and #20 bar all-thread. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) centralizers were added onto each bar section. After the micropiles were set, grout (Portland Type I-II cement) was tremie-piped into the boring. The contractor Kirkland Office 1911 Fifth Avenue I Kirkland,WA 98033 P 1425.827.7701 Mount Vernon Office 1508 S.Second Street,Suite 101 I Mount Vernon,WA 98273 P 1425.827.7701 Tacoma Office 11552 Commerce Street,Suite 102 I Tacoma,WA 98402 P 1253.722.2992 www.aesgeo.com Federal Way School District Elementary 24 Federal Way, Washington Summary for Observation of Micropile Installation and Testing then removed the casing sections, leaving 10 feet of casing in the upper portion of the boring to satisfy the un-bonded zone requirements. AESI was onsite full time to document micropile installation and compliance per the approved construction documents. All micropiles were installed correctly per the approved construction documents. MICROPILE TESTING OBSERVATION While onsite, AESI observed the stress testing of seven micropile anchors. The tests fell on gridlines B, D, 5.5, and 8 which satisfied the approved testing locations. Two verification tests and five proof tests were observed. The verification tests involved pulling the micropile to 200 percent of the maximum design load. The proof tests involved pulling each micropile to 160 percent of the maximum design load. The verification tests utilized the micropiles with #20 bar. The proof tests utilized the micropiles with both#18 and#20 bar.AESI used the testing guidelines presented in the approved plans. The setup included two independent dial indicator gauges to measure the micropile movement. The contractor provided AESI with the certification of calibration report for the hydraulic cylinder used in the testing. All tests met the minimum acceptance criteria for production micropiles. Please refer to our field reports for more testing information and data. CLOSURE AESI was onsite, full time, to observe the installation and testing of micropiles at Federal Way School District Elementary 24. While onsite, the contractor installed sixteen micropiles and completed a total of seven load tests. Our observations and data indicated that all the micropiles were installed correctly and the testing verified the design presented in the approved construction documentation. We appreciate the opportunity to submit this summary and hope that it meets your needs. We have enjoyed working with you and look forward to helping you with any geotechnical-related needs in the future. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call.
