Hwang 1 Overview Performance Measures Crime Statistics Goals & Objectives Reducing Crime and Violence 2 City/Agency Profile City of Federal Way is the 5th largest city in King County, 9th largest in the state, with a population of 97,440 (as of April 1, 2018 by OFM). Federal Way is one of the fastest growing areas. Full service police agency: Authorized staff of 163; 134 sworn officers, 29 civilian employees, and 25 volunteers. 3 Response Time 4 Highest Call Types & Response Times 5 Crime Analysis/Prevention 6 RSO Program 7 Field Operations Division 8 Overtime 9 Crime Statistics 10 2018 Crime Rate Crime is down in Federal Way across most reported categories. Overall crime reduction of 11% in 2018, in comparison to the previous year; from 9,133 total crimes to 8,096. 2018 reflects the lowest overall crime rate in five years. The City has reduced crime two years in a row, with an overall crime reduction of 10% in 2017. Crime fell on a number of person and property crimes (homicide, aggravated assault, larceny, motor vehicle theft, fraud, residential burglary, and vandalism). 11 2018 Crime Rate 1 homicide compared to 7 in 2017 (-86%). Motor vehicle thefts down to 805 this year compared to 960 in 2017 (-16%). 398 residential burglary cases compared to 423 in 2017 (-6%). Increase uniformed police presence in downtown, Hwy 99, and other hotspots to impact violent crimes (gun violence), transient related crimes, auto theft, burglary, and vehicle prowls. Regional collaboration to address gang and gun violence, drugs, and auto theft. Traffic enforcement with focus on reducing speed, DUI, and distracted driving. 17 2019 Goals & Objectives (cont’d) Monthly crime analysis information distribution and implementation of directed patrol and operational plans. Maintain the RSO verification program to enhance public safety and provide better registration compliance. Continue Crime Analysis and Prevention Specialists (CAPS) outreach into the community, providing education and enhanced services. Maintain positive relations with the citizens in our community, “earning the public’s trust” by positive contact and engagement in our daily work and through various programs. 18 Reducing Violence 19 Reducing Violence Reduce dependency on drugs Significant number of crimes have a nexus to drugs, i.e. opioid epidemic. Influence on Violence Celebrating and promoting the violent culture in movies, music, and entertainment. Idolizing guns and gangs – kids are exposed to so much violence. Law Enforcement deals only with the most extreme and advanced parts of this social issue – police can’t do it alone. 20 Reducing Violence A high percentage of violent individuals grow up in abusive, neglectful households, lack positive role models Social economic factors influence crime Safe Storage of Firearms Reduce crimes committed with stolen guns. Reduce opportunities for children to be injured or killed (accident or suicide) by unlocked firearms. 21 Questions? Questions 22
